Well I picked on up.. I wanted a CPU for my Shuttle setup I'm putting together.

This will work out nice.

What type of ram does this combo need? PC3200 and better?

Yes, regretfully. I ordered this as well, but realized I will need to ditch the pc2700 I have and get some pc3200 stuff. Gets more expensive by the minute.

Will this fit in and run in my Antec Sonata case with 350 Watt power supply it came with a couple of years ago

According to Antec, the Sonata is not rated above the Northwood core P4 3.0......

the Prescott core runs too hot for the case...

My wife has a 3.4 GHz P4 550 running in a Sonata, and it is running well within the safe thermal limits of the processor.

Where do you get that from? It states on their website that it is 3.0 Ghz compatible. This case has a 120mm fan in back and a room for an optional 120mm fan in front. Those fans move a lot of air.

The one rear 120mm fan is rated at almost 80 CFM.

This case with another 120mm fan in the front would be able to have any CPU in there that is out today, and there would be no thermal issues.

From Antec tech support on the telephone...

When they say 3.0 pentium, they mean Northwood core, not Prescott....3.0 ghz comes in both flavors.....Prescott runs hotter and according to TomsHardware there is really no advantage (yet) to the Prescott core, even with it's 1meg L2 cache.

Sonata II is rumored to have better cooling via a bulbous front bottom to accomodate an intake fan.

3GHz Northwood was the latest [and hottest] P4 available at the time the Sonata received its 'certified for P4 3GHz' marketing label. That doesn't mean it can't support higher CPUs.

I have a Dynatron cooling fan 'certified up to XP2400+' because XP2400+ was just released. The exact same HSF with no modifications whatsoever was later 're-certified' up to XP2800+, but Dynatron obviously isn't going to recall all older supplies of this HSF just to put a different sticker on the box and fan.

Antec must be hard-up for money, encouraging people to believe they must buy a new case each time they want to upgrade their CPU. If you're that worried about it, cut a hole over the processor area and insert an 80mm filter or fan with finger guard.

$5.00 vs. $65.00+ = same result.

OK, stupid question here... I picked up one of these deals a couple weeks ago. How can I identify whether mine is a D0 or E0 model? The only info on the package label is the pack date, 11/29/04, and if I'm reading it correctly (is the S-spec at the end of the product code?) the s-spec looks like SL7E4. Does that mean I have the D0 revision?

Also, out of curiosity... have any of you run into a problem with this combo feezing and getting a blue screen? I'll search the other forums as well...

Thanks!

ahh I cant decide on a P4 combo or the Athlon64 combo! Im leaning towards the Athlon64 since the next Windows is 64 bit! help!
