Box Spring Alternative ?

I have a mattress, but it sits on the floor. I imagine box springs are decently expensive right? See its a full size mattress...i was thinking i could take a piece of plywood and set it under the mattress, put that on cinder blocks..then take a tapestry or some decorative cloth and hang it over the edges of the bed so u cant see the blocks. Would this work you think?

Drive around looking for Garage sales and Estate sales. Naturally, I'd be very wary about buying a used mattress at such a place, but the box spring should be safer methinks.

Ive never seen expensive boxsprings. Call up your local furniture/matress store and ask hwo much they are.

I'll trade you my sofa bed for that leaky mattress. I sleep much better with the thing closed up, then I would with the bed folded out. If I ever got a real mattress, it would probably leave me 1.5 feet of space to maneuver.

I guess I'll go sleep in the tub or something. Oh wait, I mean shower stall. :|

Go to a big thrift store (including salvation army and vinny's) they usually have boxsprings and mattresses for cheap. Look around, you should be able to find new one's still in the protective plastic wrap.

costco / sams club will sell you a metal bed frame for about $50.00 or so, put the plywood in the bed frame (instead of a box spring) and put the mattress on the plywood.

I wouldn't think that the plywood would be strong enough in the center to not bend, atleast in the middle....which would be very uncomfortable to sleep on.

what you may be able to do is get some planks of 1x4s, set them across in a metal frame and then set the plywood on top of that. I'd think that would work much better.

I slept on a mattress on top of plywood on top of cement blocks for 10+ years after I got out of college. Put blocks on each corner and in the middle so the plywood doesn't sag.
