ok..so my chick is sick and we are sitting around watching comedy central and an ad for this
Text
comes on.

they say you select a weight on the side and that it will then weigh anywhere from 5 1/2 pounds to 55 or something like that.
so if i set it for 5 what the hell happens to the other 50 pounds in there?
how does it prevent me from actually lifting it?
im confused but i suck at science and stuff.
splain it to me!
(please)

Nah, I saw that ad too. The selector knob determines how many of the weighted rings are actually lifted off the stands.

oh.
the picture on the website doesnt have a stand.
i had no idea the stand was involved.
FINE!
no more gin + cable for me.

🙁

Worst thing about these is simply they are VERY expensive. I looked into them and the other brand when I bought my weights and I just bought a ton of DBs instead.

What's the point when you can just buy weight plates?
These are dumbells, the idea being that instead of needing an entire rack of dumbells weighing a lot, you get one set that only weighs 80lbs or whatever. For example, if you wanted 40lbs in dumbells, (assuming 2x each weight), you'd have to buy two 20lb dumbells. Most people move up in weight after a few weeks though, so when you started using 50lbs, you'd have to buy 2 25's and have 90lbs in four dumbells, where with the bowflex you get 80lbs or whatever in one set.

At my local Sportsmart, they have them on display. It would be convient from switching to different dumbbell excerises.

Like another poster stated, it's PITA at times to take them off and on. Unless you're go the dumbell setup like your local gym where there multitudes of dumbbells of different weight.

You can also buy small handles that allow the addition of weight plates, to change the dumbell's weight, but they suck for two reasons: 1) very slow to setup 2) not very safe/secure

These are my ghetto dumbells, to save buying heavier. I actually used them last week and they worked pretty well!

I use those. No need to waste more money than I have to.

To make BowFlex a buttload of cash off of gullible/lazy folks.

yeah, because everybody who's not lazy doesn't bother looking for a more efficient means of accomplishing a task.

For the person who doesn't work out because it's too much effort to set the dumbbell to the right weight 😛

It has nothing to do with laziness. I absolutely hate taking the time to unlock each side of my dumbells, adding/removing weight to fit the exercise, and locking the end caps back on hoping I cranked down the lock hard enough that they won't slide off and land on my friggin face or something. It's a serious PITA after a while.

I actually thought these were kind of cool, they give you a whole set of different weights with a very efficient use of space and easy switching. Much better than bowflexes other junk.

That said, they're pretty expensive so I don't think I'd ever buy them.

No. From what I have seen they are:
1: Expensive
2: Not heavy enough to do (me at least) anygood.
3: Huge. Even at the lowest weight the things look longer than a 150Lb dumbell from a real gym.
