Bowflex dumbell

The bowflex machine itself is overpriced garbage. The dumbbells are definitely overpriced... but I have to say I like the idea of easy weight selection. I have an old school bench, bar & dumbbells myself, and it's a pain in the ass to adjust weights on dumbbells... you've got 4 thingies to unscrew, 1-2 plates to put on or put away, 4 thingies to rescrew... If you're rich, this might be worth trying out.

They are good dumbells, they just cost too much considering they only go up to 52lbs, which is too low of a weight to be truly versatile. At least powerblocks or ironmasters go a lot higher. Ironmasters you can get up to 125lbs each, though pricier and not as quick to change the weight. I think powerblocks go up to either 75 or 90, depending on which set you get, though I can't remember.

powerblocks are just as expensive. You can go higher in weight, though, which is nice.

Overall feel and ease of use, though, goes to the Bowflex model.

As far as cost $400 for a set with matching stand and the fact it only takes up a 2x2x3 foot area is worth it.

I would check classified ads and garage sales. You can probably pick up a set of dumbbells for cheap that have been gathering dust. I have a set of cast iron hex dumbbells and I love them.
