Bow hunting - so relaxing

I've been sitting in a tree stand about 20 feet in the air for a couple of hours now. Beautiful weather - nice breeze, sunny, around 60 degrees. Tree is gently swaying in the occasional stronger breeze. Wildlife all around me without a clue I'm sitting here. Birds fluttering from tree to tree, eating whatever it is they're finding. Virtually no sign or sound of human existence. I can't think of anything that's more relaxing.

Any other bow hunters out there?

Not a bow hunter but I saw a hot chick on youtube shoot a fish with a bow today. That looks like fun.

What if a man in full plate comes up and at you? Huh? What will you do then, you low-tech person... 600 years ago called.

you got this backwards. Plate went out with the introduction of the long bow.

?? Laugh at him? I'm well out of reach of someone in full plate. I also thing that modern bows and arrows would penetrate any plate that a person could stand up in.

Why do squirrels always sneak up behind you, then make a shitload of sound, startling the crap out of you?

My dad is a big hunter. He got a 6 with the bow a week ago today weighing in around ~140 lbs. This was in the Catskill, NY area. I just got off the phone with him actually and he told me it's all butchered up and sealed in bags, so I'll be able to bring a bunch of venison back with me after I head up for Thanksgiving. :D He tried getting me into it as a kid, I just didn't enjoy it at all. It was WAY too boring for me. I can't tell you how many times I fell asleep sitting against a tree while he tried driving shit towards me - LOL. He never got mad, though inside I'm sure he was probably biting his tongue. Not to mention sitting in the middle of the woods when it's completely dark out and 12 degrees at 4 in the morning .... never really peaked my interest - especially at 12, 13, 14 years old. I had better shit to do then, especially at that hour. Sleep comes to mind.... :p

Bow hunting from a tree stand is relaxing, because (a) you have to pay attention, so you don't fall out of the stand/tree, and (b) you're out in the open, instead of in a (somewhat sound insulating) blind, so you can't be sitting there playing Candy Crush on your phone, and expect to have any deer walk up to, or past, your tree. ;)

I didn't get into bow hunting but I did go rifle hunting a handful of times. I don't think I remember one time that I didn't see some sort of wildlife once I sat still. It was always very peaceful. It's something more people should experience.

Also, chipmunks are horrible little creatures. If you have two playing around in the leaves nearby you may as well forget anything else lol.

I've been "bow hunting" a few times. But in Southern VA it has a different meaning. Down there it means "Hey! Lets go into the woods with bows and drink lots of beer and then tell everyone that we hunted all day and didn't get anything."

As an 8 year-old I used to go bow hunting with my dad, primarily for deer, and don't recall ever bringing anything down. Spending time enjoying nature and escaping the work-a-day world wasn't exciting at that time in my life, though today would be a different story.

otoh, hunting for quail and pheasant (with shotguns) we'd bring home quite a few birds. We would clean and defeather them, then mom would proceed to overcook the crap out of them. Oh, and we had to keep an eye out for buckshot in the meat.

Good times.

I enjoy hunting, but there is little more that I hate than sitting for hours in a tree stand. i did that a little when I was younger, and I'd just as soon not even fill my tag.

There are a million ways to enjoy a day in the woods or the mountains without sitting on your arse until it goes numb. Hike, run, fish, mountain bike, climb, photograph; anything is better than being a lump on the side of a tree.

Then the OP was mistaken by a gung-ho hunter for a deer hiding up a tree.

"Ahh, relaxing in A&E with a morphine drip, this is the life!"

I don't really find hunting appealing. I have had lots of pets in my day and the thought of killing an animal, even if it's for food, just doesn't appeal. Sure, if it's my way of life and my sole source of food, you gotta do what you gotta do... but... when I can drive a few minutes to go get a steak that was going to be steak no matter what... I'd just do that.

Im probably screwed if a zombie apocalypse goes down.

I've gotten a total of 10 hours of sleep since Saturday, I'm amazed I'm even conscious right now. I'm not even sure how I got to work today. I'm sure at any moment I will suddenly fall asleep.

I used to go all the time. I loved sitting in a tree all morning.

One year i had some fucknuts wondering around the forest yelling every few seconds. they were trying to scare away the deer so they wouldn't get shot. While i don't care if i get a deer (though always try!) i was very pissed that they were yelling.

I've only been hunting a few times, but I'm not real big on it. I only shoot animals that are a pest/problematic these days. I know some people that hunt the deer for food. Two nice sized deer are a lot of meat.

Idiots like that are why I prefer to rifle hunt. A melee hit with a bow just does not have the same force as a face buttstroke from a rifle.

I mostly only rifle hunt because I hunt with my family, and they are all wildland firefighters. Our bow season is right in the middle of the fire season, so they dont want to take any time off and lose overtime and fire pay. I prefer to hunt in the snow too if possible.

I did get a nice buck this year, but came up with nothing when I tried for spike-only elk. Saw nothing but big bulls and cows during elk season unfortunately. This years mule deer buck -

Man, I still have an old Jennings Uni-Star I haven't used in decades.

Used to have several bows, even when I was little.

Haven't done it since I moved to FL in 1990.

Yeah, just stomping around in the woods isn't like kicking back in a tree blind.

That is more like meditation.
