Why do they keep putting CDs in text books? Even in programmnig books I don't use them. They're a waste of plastic and money.
Don't they have sample code in there that keeps you from having to type it all from scratch ? I'm sure some people put it to use.

The industry which really needs investigating is the mattress industry.
That is definitely true. Bait & switch, false advertising, and intentionally misleading consumers seem to be standard practice in that industry. You don't realize how bad it is until you actually start shopping for one.

The CD in my biochem book and orgo book were quite good, sometimes three dimensional and transitional stuff does not really explain itself easily on paper.

But yeah, the CD in my Java book was absolutely worthless. It didn't even have complete projects on it, just a template with insert code here type stuff.

It's funny how our university book store tries to justify the high book prices. It's even funnier when they all those stupid justifications don't apply for their EXPENSIVE, USED books :|

I guess I can see why a book might need SOME updated material. But can't this be posted on a website? Seriously, why not just have a PDF file that you can download that shows changes to the book? Then a book could have "Enron" or "the new president" in an update file that was 20 pages or so.

Sheesh. Glad I'm graduating! Good luck to the rest of you!

Actually overseas, they sell the same books (sometimes without the bells and whistles) for fraction of the price, with a label that says "do not reimport into the US"
That has to stop.

That's how I got my $110 brand new Calc book for $40 including shipping from England. That's because the publishing companies don't bribe and artificially inflate the costs to rape college students over there.

Just go to the student store, get the ISBN, plug it in & save $$$

ahh, i see the public education system served me well, It made me smart enough to not waste time and money on colloge and assume that i could get by on my 12 years of substandard education. Ahh, life is sweet.

Textbooks are a ripoff and I firmly believe it should be illegal for them to sell a book for $130, buy it back for $15, then sell it used for $115!

The biggest thing that ever pissed me off was in my 2nd year, I needed a psychology textboox. It was a brand new edition that year and they forced you to buy it as a package with the study guide (an extra $40!). At the end of the semester (4 months later) when they do their buy backs, they said they wouldn't take it because a new edition was out!

There was a new edition in half of a year!!!!

FSCK I WANTED TO THROW MY BOOK RIGHT THROUGH THE BOOKSTORE WINDOW!

Books are a rip-off for sure, but I keep my books. I always end up reusing them when I'm debating something, or trying to get a real quick overview of something I forgot. I spent 380 on books this semester.

I had a single book this year that cost me $275. The other 6 were all in between $140 and $200. That's a whole ton of cash.

$1200 or so for the year for me.

Anybody know of a petition or something we could sign to get the attention of our representatives? A grass roots campaign would definitely be something to look into.
