Bought Our Son A Car... Hope He Doesn't Gag!

I don't see why he would be embarrased to drive a Grand Marquis...I just don't see how cheap it is for a '95...its a damn good deal.

Although I'm personally partial to Chevy Caprice Classic, the ones from the early 90s...those were some nice boats.

He should feel happy that he's got a car to call his own. I loathe the day in three years when my step-son turns 15 and throws at my wife and I that I was given a car back in 1983 for my birthday............1957 Chevy. (My father and grandmother had a soft spot for their only boy. It was my Grandmother;s car). Spent the next year restoring it and the following year destroying it. Sold it off when I blew the tranny and went 50/50 with my father for a '65 Impala SS with no rust no blemish in the interior. She lasted me for 3 years and 3 speeding tickets.

I firmly believe in a 16yr old having his/her own car. I got lucky with what I got but would have been happy with anything at that age, really.

16 year old in a Grand Marquis huh?? By 18, do you think he'll be retired in Florida and having dinner at 4:00 PM... 😀

j/k, I'd be happy to have any car given to me.

I can't believe some of you are like "Why'd you get him a car like that? That's not a very cool "teen" car..." Any 16yr old should be grateful for getting a car for *free.* Especially a car that's only 6 or 7 years old and in good shape. Some of your posts remind me of when I was in high school and a girl got a black Porsche for her 16 b-day, but she was mad 'cause she wanted a red Porsche. So her dad ponied up even more cash and got the thing painted red for his brat kid. (yes, this is a true story).

🙂 You guys are a riot! Just got home with the car. Hid it in a garage next door. My wife, bless her heart, got all the paperwork done including plates. It's all legal and done. She's still not too happy about just 'giving' it to him. I told her that I had him in mind when I bought it, and that was that. We'll get her another vehicle of her own choosing soon (but God, NOT a mini van!)

I forgot about how poor trucks handle in the snow. I was figuring on coughing up another $500.00 for some good Michelins for safety's sake, but I doubt that would compensate fully. This car has good rubber all around, but we'll see what happens when the snow flys.

Glad to hear of Tominator's good experiences with these cars. I anticipate few problems. Only concern was sending him down the road in a 'grandpa buggy'. Still, it's better than our other vehicles. It's not like we're in a 'rich' neighborhood, but all these kids are driving new cars of one kind or another. When I was in school, most of us drove beaters or old trucks. Things sure have changed!

Hey, any of you guys need a CarFax report? Send me the VIN, and I'll punch it up. Might as well get some use out of this!

When I graduated from HS, my parents got me a 1985 Mazda 626. At first I was like "WTF?!? I wanted to get a sweet ass computer upgrade". Well that miffed my parents, but after about 2 days, I finally realized that they had GIVEN ME A CAR! I had my own damn car!

Don't be surprised if you get a similar responce. Trust me, if he doesn't like it right away, he will in a few days when he realizes he can take off when and where he wants 😀

That's cool...your son is gonna get a hell of a surprise...! Although, how come you didn't give him your old Lincoln and you take the newer car? I would personally have gotten an older Caddy or Caprice instead of the Marquis, but it doesn't matter..both are large V8s =) Is our son into cars? Then he may enjoy modding it! It could be a father-and-son thing.

I dunno how you guys say kids drive expensive cars? In my neighbourhood, the most expensive car would be a '97 Civic. Most kids in school drive '88 Civics, '88 Camry, and older trucks. Very few people have cars newer than '95. Kids in America must be rich!

Damn brandon, you sure have had some rotten luck! Hope the Cherokee changes that!

This Marquis is all white. Put a searchlight on the front pillar and it would look exactly like a police cruiser. But when I got underneath it and saw how clean it was, I knew I had to buy it. No idea why he let it go so cheap. It's got a stereo cassette deck, so a CD player is definitely in it's future. When he's done with it I'll take it off his hands, scratched and rusty or not!

There's no way I would expect him to drive my old Lincoln, mAdD INDIAN. It used to be a gorgeous, garaged in winter keeper, but those days are done. She turned into daily driver about 5 years ago and I haven't even washed it since. Still mechanically sound, but not much to look at. He's learning to drive in it, but he'd rather drive the van. I don't give a damn about what I drive, but I know what it's like to be a teen. Hell, after I drove that old Belair a couple years, I snagged a '66 GTO 😉

Well Ornery: I'd drive your Lincoln even if it looks ugly...I saw an old Lincoln at a body shop and damn it was sweet!! Too bad it wouldn't fit in my garage..hehe.

You're not as good a parent as don niggera's parents! Your kid deserves a nice new celica!!

Let us know how he likes it. I'm getting psyched to go check out a '93 sentra tomorrow at 9:00. It's $2350 asking price but I can talk him down 😛

Does he expect a new car? I'd always dreamed about getting a car as a gift.

<< I'd be embarassed but I'm a car freak and that's pretty much the only reason why... I need to have my sport compact ...

other than the fact i am a car nut and am specific on what i like, i wouldn't mind having the car.. but only gets me from a to b... that's not what I look for in my cars..
>>

Me too.. I look more than just getting me from point A to B, but I bet we're thinking totally different things..

Safety, reliability, status symbol(i.e. I don't wanna be seen in 1985 Pinto), a V6 engine, smooth springy throttle response, comfort, ease of use, visibility and fuel economy.

As far as safety is concerned, I want this one. American drivers are extremely scary at least.

Realistically, I think I'd go with Honda Accord, Volvo or Toyota. I have no reason to be sitting in a cramped Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Corvette sorta with unnecessary V8 moster chugging down gas. I KNOW Accord is going to give me more room, better comfort and better fuel economy. I've driven a 2001 Corvette with V8 Z06. Never again. I don't like that sitting position and it wasn't comfy. I've also sat on rear seat of 98 Mustang. Worse than city bus.

Does he expect a new car?

Hah! We ALWAYS treat them right for Christmas and Birthdays, but NEVER anything like this! My wife asked what we're going to do for his 10yo brother? Oh hell, I'll just buy him an ATV or something, right? Sheesh. Someday he'll turn 16 and we'll buy him a decent car too. And it will probably be a grandpa car as well. Not that I'm all about grandpa-mobiles, but I'm that concerned about their safety and can't afford a damn Excursion or Suburban!

How about a year worth of transit pass? Its about $400-500. VERY VERY Safe. Gets him from Point A to Point B. Its not like he NEEDS a car. Think again. If buses are available why buy him a car?

I think your 10 year old will understand - but you better believe that you'll have to get him something similar when he turns 16!

If your kid doesn't expect it getting a gift of a nice new car that is more pricey than even his parent's car I think is going to make him very very happy!

hehe... my first car was a 90 tempo automatic, painted black but looked reddish-black due to the rust. I only got it after my sister could no longer drive it. She had crashed it 4 times, and you had to drive it with two feet like it was a stick... one foot always on the gas somewhat, otherwise it would stall. She and her friends (while inebriated) had managed to break off every mirror except the vanity mirror on the passenger side. They had broken off the drivers side vanity mirror, both the sideview mirrors, and the rearview mirror. The sideview mirrors were duct taped back on, the rear-view was glued back on (though occasionally in would fall off). The rear bumper hung down on both sides, but it only hung down 1 inch lower than it should on the left, but the right hund down a good 4 inches. My dad had me check the oil on it once... I came back in and told him I had to go pick up some more oil. He told me that there was a quart of oil in the garage. I told him that I had added that, and afterwards the dipstick read "Add one quart." Thats how my sister treated that car. It eventually died of a cracked engine block.

*Here is your brand new car, have fun driving, and pay your own insurance, gas bill, maintenance etc.* <the son is blue in the face>

<< If he gags over any car you bought him, you should smack him around a bit.
😉

I would gripe at my parents if they got me something remotely crappy.

Ornery, excellent choice... I hope he enjoys and APPRECIATES it...

My first car was an '85 Lincoln Town Car.... My dad gave it to me with about 120K miles and I gave it back to him
with 155K.... it was retired at 162K

There's and old saying: Beggars can't be choosers

That certainly applies to ANY car a parent buys for thier children.

I'm sure he'll be very happy.

If not send it my way...I'll cover the shipping. 😀

If he can't afford his own insurance, gas bill, maintenance etc.* or if he doesn't like it, you guys are going to have to get in line behind his mom for that car. Uh, I get next dibs. 😉

Sadly Jerboi, he's going to be driving to school, work, errands and visiting. Our RTA can't even remotely come close to handling all that. As long as he'll be on the road, it will be in a reliable, safe vehicle if I can help it. If I could afford it, I'd get him a brand new one of his choosing as long as it had the safety angle covered.

I don't know where my dad got the idea to make me pay for everything, but I paid for my car, insurance and upkeep from day one. Paid room and board when I turned eighteen. Some of my friends did too, and some didn't. They all ended up being OK taxpaying citizens. If my son needs a lesson in being self sufficient, I can teach him real quick. If he talked back or lied to me, I might be more inclined to start that lesson, but he doesn't. Hmmmm, as I recall, I was smoking dope, drinking, lying and talking back to my dad on a regular basis! 😱

<< I would gripe at my parents if they got me something remotely crappy. >>

Your a self centered piece of garbage. If one of my boys did that I would knock him on his ass and then take the keys back. He would walk until he could buy his own.

<< Jerboi, I hope you don't get it.

Hmm, at my school, there are about 5 kids that drive BMW M3's...

I asked... their answer Sounds good, but you need to get at least 95% in ALL your classes. .. fvck!
