Bought Our Son A Car... Hope He Doesn't Gag!

My first car (In 1976) was a 1966 Mustang Fastback that I got for $750. I wish I still had it. I just bought my daughter her first car, it's a 1997 Cavalier with 32,000 miles. I looked at pickups (I have a 2001 Silverado) but didn't want her driving one in the rain. The back end gets too squirrelly , in the rain, for someone just learning to drive.

If he whines, complains, or even makes a face, send him over to me. I don't care if you bought him a pink minivan with the gay triangle symbol on the back, he should appreciate it. I had to work for my POS car, he should be very happy.

My first car was an 88 LeBaron GTS hatchback.. cost $300

what a great car too!

so comfy and pretty damn reliable too! GOT 300 dollars for it when i traded it in for my new car too, it had 255,000 kms and running strong. that was a sad day when i traded it in.

God if he complains give it to me. I'm going out in an hour to buy a "new" car. I'm looking to spend $1600-2300. Pretty sad eh?

I'm 17 and my car is a rusty old 1990 Ford taurus with numerous dents and dings. I love that car 🙂 if your son is like any other he'll love just having a car

<< ...think about the repair... >>

That car is as solid as they come. It takes no backseat to reliability and ease of maintainence compared to ANY car! I don't need an Edmonds rating. There are 7 or 8 of them floating around my family and their reputation is steller. My Dad's is a '94 with the Police Package with 165,000 on it....nothing but routine upkeep....drives like a new one and if you see a 70+ fellow at a stop light and you happen to think 'ha here's and old guy in a boat and watch me smoke him,' be prepared, you've been warned! That thing hauls donkey!😀

Ask any mechanic about ease of service.

Free cars are the best hot deals of your life! Your kid should be thanking his lucky stars to have parents like you who are buying him a car. Ornery, don't sweat it -- and if he gets unnerved about his friends driving SUVs and Camrys, take the boat away from him for a week and maybe that'll put some things in perspective. 😀

Its better you got him the car. Trucks are not safer. Without any weight in the back trucks take a reasonable amount of skill to keep them facing in the direction you want.

BTW my first car-------> 1964 F85 Oldsmobile

True. If he is as good a kid as you say he'll know that as well 🙂

<< ...Just got off the phone with my wife. Even she is a little concerned about 'giving' him the car for a Christmas/Birthday present. She said it won't be in his name anyway. Bah! The only other vehicles we have for him to drive are a rusty old '77 Town car and an '88 E-150 Conversion van. Talk about embarrassing!

Conversion Vans are GREAT for High School kids to drive!

I drove one Junior and Senoir year, and I was the Number One Pimp riding in that thing.

Personally, thats not an ideal car for a teenager. It may move well, but it might make sense to buy something more in tune with what he likes, something a little sportier

Both my daughters did the public transportation thang till they could buy their own cars, they would have been thrilled to be given a 4k "boat" for Xmas at age 16.

Teenagers drive with their dicks (guys do). you want to temper that as much as possible.

Buy him a nice Integra or something where he thinks he is "hot sh!t" and flips it? I don't think so.

A car like that is fine. If he knows anything about cars, he'll appreciate the rear-wheel drive and the V8 in it.

And to the person who suggested a Civic - are you a lemming?

i had my moms old 92 corolla as my first car, but i didn't get it till i was 17 and I wasn't allowed to bring it to college my freshman year 🙁

seems so long ago but its only been 4 years.

My mom had a Crown Vic from that same year. We traded it in at 100k miles because it was burning oil like it was going out of style. She'd fill it up, and a week later she had to put in 4 quarts for the dip stick to show full. Rings were gone. We topped it off with oil and traded that puppy in. Buick dealer had no idea that it needed a new engine, they didn't have anyone follow the car on their test drive to see the puffs of blue smoke every time you stepped on the gas pedal.

I think the engine in her car was just a bad one... Those 4.6's are usually nice engines.

First thing that needs tweaking -- exhaust 😉 Make it rumble! Flowmaster!

Bah. That's a great car for a 16 year old:

1. He'll be popular because he can fit all of his friends in it.
2. If he hits something like a Civic, there will merely be a scratched bumper, whereas the Honda will be totalled.
3. I bet that think rides silky smooth on the freeway. Glides over seams, cracks, and the occasional pothole.
4. He'll learn to drive a big beast, that way if he ever gets a smaller car, he'll feel like he's parking a bicycle. The exact opposite of the Soccer Moms who take 10 minutes to get out of a parking spot in their new SUVs.
5. People will think it's an undercover cop car, so they'll usually try to stay out of the way so they don't get a ticket.

And that car isn't even a boat. When I think of boat, I think of the older American cars, you know, the ones you see the hood rats / p.w.t. driving around.

Anyway, that's a real nice car for a gift, and if your kid is as great as you think, he'll be gratetful!

Ornery,

NEVER EVER show him what the Mercury Marauder looks like. EVER.

4.6L
300HP
300lb/t

The Marauder is the American car returning to its muscle car heritage.

If I had a Marquis, I'd find Kenny Brown, and give him every penny I ever made to make me a hot car like the Marquis. If I had a 5.7L Caprice, I'd take it to Lingenfelter to get it up to Impalla specs.

I see such potential in this car! Then again, I'm a nut for old 2 series volvos. Actually what you should do is, sell the Gran Marquis and get a 1984 Volvo 245 Turbo. Imagine the insurance on that! Virtually zilch, nada compared to a modern car like the Marquis🙂

Volvos are hip. So are Marauders🙂

Edit: What color is Mara...I mean Marquis?

Good price on a good car. It's safer than a pick up any day. He should be thrilled. A Q45 is too much car/horsepower for a 16 YO, you made a good choice.

He should be thrilled. Not many parents will buy their kids a nice newer car like that.
While I've always had new cars I've had to make payments on them. First new car was an 89 honda civic. $169 a month. A lot for me then but considering I'm paying more than double these days in car payments... If he wants I'll take the Grand Marquis, he can have my car and make montly payments on it. 😛

Cool! You know you just cursed him don't you. He will ALWAYS be picked to drive now since he can fit three times as many people in that car as he can in a civic 🙂

The "biggest" (pun intended 🙂) problem I see with it is that he'll have a bitch of a time parking it in crowed high school parking lots. I'd be worried about him taking out somebodies car with it in a fender bender 🙁
