is this DELL, or IBM or something else, I know ibm you have to request rescue disks seperately and give them a good reason to send it. Dell sends the disks, the key should be on the back of the laptop

They probably have an icon on the desktop to create a set of backup disks, which will include all the crap they have installed on there. Many new laptops do this and you cannot do a fresh install. Only way to get around it is to have your own OEM copy. Or just delete all the crap.

they usually put the OS on a hidden recovery partition. On IBM laptops you press the access IBM button before windo ws starts up.

Make/model?

HP offers a $10 option to get the XP install disc. Dell does too. I don't think Lenovo does, but you can get the recovery discs from them.

My Sony has all the recovery info stored in a partition on the hard drive. I DO have a copy of XP Pro however, so I can always use that with the licence that came with the laptop.

Sorry, but I dont think that will work. The license that is on the laptop is for the fujitsu only. You need a fujitsi CD to use it. If you take an OEM copy of XP and try to use that license, it will not work.

Yup. I learned that the hard way when I was working on a Gateway laptop for a friend. The only sure way to get a fresh copy of the OS installed is to call the manufacture and request the CD.

That's because Lenovo has an agreement with IBM to carry the name of IBM Thinkpad for 3 years.

But if you completely wipe out the HD, how could the Fujitsu license stay on the laptop?

Own copy and own key, yes. Own copy and using the key on the laptop... wont work.

OP, call Fujitsu and see if they'll send you an XP CD. Another option is using the add/remove programs to uninstall everything you don't want, then defrag. Trust me when I say that speeds up the computer significantly, and takes a LOT less time then formatting.

i dont believe that OEM sellers can charge you extra for the CD Media since you already have the license, remember microsoft prohibits sale of the discs without the license, regardless if they charge you 10 bucks or 5 bucks or a penny. shipping is probably another story though...

dell does it at the time of purchase so that's okay, but if you call in for the disc and they ask you to pay, i doubt that's legal.

and if they tell you that you can restore with the hard drive, tell them you had it wiped or the hdd replaced as I normally do to dell, they can't assume that everybody will want 5GB taken away from them for restore purposes in the stock HDD.

Recovery discs won't help as it'll be the same image with tons of pre-installed crap that he already has.

I asked the same question here: Text and was given a link to a site that gives instructions on making a bootable restore disc using the files in the i/386 folder on my IBM. You might want to give that a try. I was able to do a fresh install and not worry about a hidden partion after following the directions.

I did have to call MS to activate, rather than doing it over the internet, but I was happy with the final outcome.

As far as using a disc with XP on it for install, and using the license from the laptop, I tried various XP discs both legit and otherwise, and none would accept the license from the laptop. YMMV, but I wouldn't bet on it...
