Bought myself a project

I've wanted an e39 sport automatic as a highway/vacation mule for a few years now, but nice ones command what I feel like is a ridiculous price. I didn't want to put $15k+ in a low mileage nice car that will have wet dogs, sand, salt, door dings, drifting down gravel roads etc treatment all the time.

On the same token, I haven't had a project car in awhile, so for the past few months I've been trolling craigslist for anything interesting that is in aesthetically good condition but needs some engine/trans work.

I ran across a decent craigslist find.. A very clean 2001 540i sport automatic, 130k miles for dirt cheap. I msg'd him as soon as it was posted, was the first person to look at it, and he already had numerous other offers to buy it outright.

It's due for a full suspension rework, valve cover gaskets, and tires. It has a small ding in the passenger rear door and the front bumper cover is torn from a curb. Reason for selling is due to an engine tick that has been quiet for the past 10k miles but all of the sudden got louder.

The PO was told by a toyota indy shop that the tick was a bad lifter, and that he should sell the car ASAP and buy a toyota. It sounds like all they did was listen to the motor, they didn't remove the valve covers to check the lifters or do any real diagnostic on it. The PO has had the car for ~20k miles and overall is not a "BMW guy". IE, can't afford the upkeep required on a heavy 10 year old sports sedan and doesn't know how to do any work himself.

One thing that is really odd.... is the tick seems to come and go. It seems like if it was vanos or timing chain it would be constant so maybe it is a lifter issue. The side that ticks has a really bad valve cover leak, so I'm somewhat hoping a coil is acting up from being soaked in oil as these m62 engines tend to knock if there's an ignition issue.

Either way, I'm not going to dump a bunch of time into diagnosing anything internal. A good rebuilt 4.4l motor is ~$1500 or so, and takes about as much time to swap as it does to replace timing guides.

Without further ado:

I really like E39s and had # of friends that had them.

No I wouldn't want to own one....just a matter of time before you find out why.

Good luck

We get it, we should all buy a corolla and be done with it. You can leave now.

Cool find! I look forward to build/repair thread.

...says the VW fanboi.

This also.

It's kind of funny when someone creates a "project thread" and someone tries to backhand compliment people on the new buy with, "well but it has issues". I mean isn't that why it's a project thread instead of "Hey guys just got a new DD"?

Nah it's just normal garage banter. I fully expect to get ragged a bit, just part of it..

Imagine an old garage/parts shop with 5-6 old men car experts sitting in chairs chatting. You've got a bodyshop guy who has seen it all, old porsche race mechanic, newer BMW certified technician, etc etc. That is our AT garage.

Ok now imagine the kid who comes in loudly complaining because his parent's BMW is more complicated than his tercel with a booming system, said kid repeatedly gets owned by the old men. That kid is vdub.

Very nice! Best looking 5-series they ever made IMO.
My neighbor has the same car in gray and has a 6-speed but doesn't look nearly as nice as yours.

i really love that E39 design.

I myself have been eyeballing a lot of E39 but more in the area of a 530i/auto but run into the same issues.

Any suggestions for tires? My go-to for any sportish car are the pilot super sports. We never get snow, so I could not care less about that aspect. Doesn't get much colder than 25-

However... They don't make a rear super sport that fits my wheels. Only michelin option are the pilot sport a/s plus.

Thoughts? I'm an enormous michelin fanboy, but I've never run the a/s and rarely use all season tires. I'm fine with letting summer tires warm up a bit in the winter.

Very nice! My wife's Dad has a 2002 530i (it's his wife's car actually) with under 60k original miles on it. I admire that car whenever I see it. It is a very nice car and I'd love to have it if they ever get rid of it.

From TR, you can get OE sized tires in many flavors. Ones I would consider:

RS3
ZII
RE-11/RE-11A
S.Drive

In that order of preference, based on my opinion.

Just picked up a primed M5 front bumper, fog lights, grills, etc... Everything except the plastic wheel well pieces, underbody tray and paint. :D

The stock one has a repairable crack, but needed a repaint. Figured I might as well go all the way..

Would be cool to have those wheels refinished in a darker gunmetal gloss finish.

I know a place that will strip, refinish and straighten wheels for $150/ea. They come out looking brand new. Well worth it to spruce up a worn set of nice wheels.

Where is this place? Send the info my way. I may need to get that done some time in the future.
