yay nice,
if everythign goes well I'll be picking up an sv650 this weekend :)

do you have a license btw?

nope! been reading the VA motorcycle manual, will do the permit test on friday. i want to take the MSF course, but the closest one is booked solid until the end of the year.

aaah i got the permit earlier this summer... got it on the second try. For some reason a lot of the answers weren't in the booklet ... i read that back and forth.

Haha, same thing for me in California. I read that thing through, but there were bunches of questions that didn't have answers. Had to take it twice, after I had already passed the MSF course.

example questions that were not in the book?

What's the maximum speed that you are permitted to use of open faced helmets without shield. (in state of michigan)

wow... i hope ours isn't like that. they have an online sample quiz, and it's pretty easy to get them all correct. so if the real test is like the sample, I shouldn't have a problem.

Jeez, I nearly had a panic attack after reading the summary heh, though I'd have been more worried if you'd gone for the 10R, the 12R is actually easier to ride apparently, it's not as mental...

Good choice with the 250 btw :)
Why would you have a panic attack if he bought te 12R for a first bike? I bought my first bike in 1987 and it was a 1986 Ninja ZX1000R brand new.....drove it off the showroom with no license and no real motorcycle experience except for some light off road stuff years before. The problem with buying a small bike to learn on is that in a few months you want/need more....so instead of wasting money I bought the fastest thing I could and just drove it carefully fou a few thousand miles to learn.

Ok a 1986 ZX1000R probably put out what 110bhp? the 12R is closer to 170, if you honestly think a 12R or a 10 are an ideal bike for somebody who doesn't even have a license yet, you need to be committed.

It's all well and good saying ride it carefully for a few thousand miles, but these bikes are not as forgiving of mistakes as a 250 or even a 600, too much throttle too quickly (or even a snatch at the throttle) and it's bye bye fairing and possibly bye bye rider as you slide the bike down the road, and I'm damn sure a new rider would not be able to handle the huge tankslapper the kwak will give you if you try to accelerate too hard out of a corner (why they didn't fit a steering damper I'll never understand but thats another story).

I'd rather buy a small cheap bike that won't matter too much if you drop it (which you will) than the latest all singing all dancing crotch rocket and be scared to use it, lets face it less than 10% of riders would be able to use the full potential of a 12 or 10R.

Triumph you sound like you've got a great deal on the ninja, go out and enjoy it and don't let anybody put any pressure on you only move up to a bigger bike when YOU feel comfortable, might be months might be years.

Getting the first bike here as well. Probably going to be a beginner buell blast for a few months. Then move on to an r6 or a big duc.

However, still looking for that every elusive Arai...since as you know, they dont sell online anymore. I'm also getting full leathers, back hump, armor, race gloves, boots, etc. Spending close to 2 grand on protective gear, which is about 50% the cost of a used bike, but I'd much rather splurge a bit on the gear and go with a cheaper bike.
