Hi there,
I finally bought the my first dSLR which is Nikon 3200.
It came with 18-55 lens.
I am thinking about getting better lens for day to day shooting.
Which is mostly indoor Kids/Family shooting.
I am torn between these two Nikon 1.8 35mm vs 50mm 1.8G.
I think Nikon 35mm f/1.8G is more suitable for my camera but I open for discussion

I say 35mm. 50mm will probably seem too long, especially inside.

Set your zoom to 50mm and see long you can live with it like that. :)

Spooon hit the nail on the head. With your kit lens, you can set it to 35 or 50mm and see how each work.

With that said, when I was on DX, I had the 35mm and it was great. 50mm would have been too "zoomy".

As a side note, it's my experience that new DSLR owners need help getting the best out of their cameras. If you have any questions about using the camera, feel free to post here. Even better if you can post a photo of what you consider the "problem" is.

Three hints:
1. Learn how to turn on your auto-iso
2. Learn how to read "shutter speed" so you can know when you camera says 3" you know that means, "Holy shit, it's going to try to take a 3-fucking-second exposure... that'll be blurry as shit."
3. Learn how to use your focus system. You probably have it set to 'auto', which means the camera decides what's in focus, and not you. It's also not set to "continuous' focus, which you'll want if you're trying to follow kids.

I use my 35mm for ~90% of my shots, but my favorite lens is my 85mm. It simply takes amazing shots.

I am looking into AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G asking price is $150.
My question is what sort of things I should look into before I give him money ?
I never bought a lens except what came with this camera :)

Just a suggestion, but check Nikon's refurbs, or perhaps one of the big stores. You might be able to pick up a like-new refurb on that lens for a good price and still get a short warranty.

2nd buying refurb which is that price as you at least get a 90 day warranty from Nikon. Things to look for on a used lens is obvious signs of being dropped. Also pick up the lens and move the aperture lever like this:

this will open the diaphragm so you see all the glass inside. Next look at a shaded window or some other soft source of light (NOT THE SUN). You may or may not see some dust. Some dust is normal, but not too much. Also look at the diaphragm:

it should look above with no oil leaking onto the blades

Of course, I'd mount on the D3200 and make sure it focuses fast and smooth with no loud squealing and the pics come in focus

OTOH the 35mm is a relatively simple prime lens with no VR so it'll more reliable than even your stock lens.

Any hobby is expensive.

RC Cars? Expensive.
Motorcycles? Expensive plus upkeep.
Computers.
Collecting watches.
Guns.
Surfboards.
Boating (oh god)
Fishing... ok, that's pretty reasonable
