Bought my daughter a Macbook Pro

Every OS will have things different people prefer. I personally would hate a bar across both monitors as I watch TV full screen on my 2nd monitor.

so do i, but ultramon does not block full screen video anymore than the regular bar would.

what gets me is they don't even give you the option.

i'm sure people have known of this issue since at least windows 95...can't be bothered to assign this task to one programmer for one day?

I love when people say "the mac hardware is great, but the os isn't". It's like buying a nice looking car that drives like shit. I have both macbook and dell laptops and I don't get overly excited for either, especially not their hardware. They both have their place and software that shines, but IMO feel I get more value out of the Dell than the Macbook.

I have a MBP that my work bought me. I absolutely love it for development and surfing the internet (the trackpad is amazing).

But, I still love Windows 7 (gaming rig), my Galaxy Tab 10.1, and my Galaxy Nexus... so I guess I like a little bit of everything

It kills me how many people out there think you can only like one or the other. I hate absolutes...only the sith deal in absolutes.

Well, all the Ultrabook makers are imitating Apple's Aluminum thin designs. That one from Vizio is the sexay:

That looks like a cheap Chinese piece of shit knockoff.

I know because I have an HP envy13. The trackpad on it is completely un usable. Without a mouse that PC might as well be used for CLI!

The only trackpad I will use for extended periods is on my mbp. PC notebook trackpads are HORRIBLE! Gestures are great. Hardly ever need to use the button when tap to click is turned on. It should be by default!

I use a silicone keyboard cover over the mbp keys. Keeps them from turning shiny with use. Barely noticeable when typing. If a drink falls over on it they keyboard is saved too. Best $20 one can spend for protection.

bought my wife a 13" MBP

best laptop screen i've used. magsafe charger is awesome. i like the gestures in 10.7. iphoto is pretty good as well.

it might not have the absolute fastest CPU and the most RAM to win the spec sheet battle but in everyday use it's the best laptop i've used. better than my work lenovo

You can get 16GB in the 2011 models for about $150 if you need it. 😉
The SB i7 is pretty snappy especially with a SSD. M4 or Samsung 830 in 256 or 512GB flavors should satisfy the need for speed.

I bootcamp'd mine and cannot get over how fast Win7 runs on it. I have a few progs that need win7 and this saves the hassle of dragging another laptop around. It's also pretty funny seeing the looks on the hardcore apple freaks when they see the windows 7 flower booting up!

And yeah the mag charger is nice. A trip over the cord that can kill the plug on a standard connector just flings it out, no worries!

really? I thought 8gb was the max (that is what I installed).

I keep flipping back and forth if I want to install a SSD for it.

Its is a ATOT custom to post this on all macbook thread, it was 3 pages long and still didnt see it, so here you go...

Buying a white macbook cured me of any desire to buy a mac. That piece of shit had the worst build quality of any notebook I've ever used.

My MacBook Air is the best laptop I've owned. No other laptop come even close to the build quality and it was only $1300.

Another vote for Apple's notebooks here too, they're very good.

For me to use a trackpad and prefer it over a mouse is saying something.

My brother has a MBP and I abhor the keyboard, his is a slightly older model and it looks like this and I really don't like using it. The spacing but lack of key 'depth' throws me off.

The screen is pretty nice though and it's held up to his abuse, so that's something. Gotta say I'm more impressed with the durability of my old Inspiron though lol, it's gone through a lot worse and hasn't failed me yet.

But if for no reason other than software, a MB would be one of my very last choices for a laptop still.

i thought about the 8GB RAM from newegg for $40, but decided against it. i've had it a month and my wife has touched it only once. i told her i was going to return it since she's not using it but she said no.

the iphones and ipad 2 get a lot more use than the MBP

Go read Engadget and Gizmodo's coverage of CES. The Vizio submissions are amazing.

Yeah but it doesn't tell ME how it feels. It's like reading motor trend and never driving the cars! eh

Still being a PC means it has a crappy trackpad. NEVER found a trackpad even close to apple's. I prefer a track stick on Lenovo and higher end Dells. Those of course get a mind of their own after using them for several minutes and wander around the screen like some newly hatched bird with a thimble full of tubifex worms up its ass. Really annoying when you're working with spreadsheets.

i liked the old trackpads on PC's from like 10 years ago. the newer ones i have to be careful to keep my hands away because i'll be typing and suddenly the pointer jumps to the other side of the screen.

it's like they are finding ways to only make them as cheap as possible for the lowest common denominator. i thought all laptops would have gigabit by now and only by accident found that my lenovo is hobbled with 100mbps ethernet

Most laptop users only care about wireless.

true, that was a one time deal. i plugged my laptop direct into a Cisco 6509 gig-e port just to back up some data from it.

and one reason i bought my MBP is that it has the best wifi reception as tested by anand

Did you buy it from ebay from a Chinese buyer? or my sarcasm meter is broken?

It was a first gen white macbook. I got it refurbed from store.apple.com. Right after the warranty ended, it started falling apart. Worst tech purchase I've ever made.

i know someone with a white macbook. the first intel one. the screen on that one is better than my 2010 lenovo. not the best built quality but it's pretty good

I'm surprised so many people are comparing macs to lenovos (granted I know the post above was related to age, not just brand). But aren't lenovo's known to be garbage? Every one I have seen are dirt cheap, I figure you get what you pay for so I've always stayed away. I know they are a branch off of IBM, but to compare a $400 lenovo to a $1000 mac isn't really fair.

[edit] Disregard this post, I just went to their page directly and realized lenovo has much higher end laptops than I see in most resellers ads.
