Return it and get Titan Quest instead.
Its everything Diablo 2 is and better.
More fun, more goodies, better classes because you can mix them. The storage works better and with Titan Quest Vault you can keep assloads of goodies and not lose them when you transfer the game or characters to another computer.

Plenty of neat user-created maps floating around too.

I recently played TQ, and indeed found it to be better than D2 in some ways. However D2's multiplayer aspect alone makes it better than TQ by a mile....

My advice to the OP is this:

firsts, beat the game in single player mode all the way to the end with any character. Have fun and don't worry about "proper" builds or anything like that.
If you go multiplayer right away, people will rush you through quests and you wont even appreciate the story, and wont enjoy the game as much. After you have beaten the game the only thing left is items... This is what this is all about. and once you get there, the game will lose it's appeal after you discover all the bots and hacks people use.

Diablo2 is a classic and well worth playing through at least once. (so is Diablo1, btw) Just don't let yourself play on bnet 24/7 grinding for items. I been there and I don't want to go back.

Why are people comparing this as a time sink like WoW? You can hit high 80s within 2 days if you're doing things right. You can get geared in a week, without putting in 14 hours a day.

What's the fun of the game if you're power leveling? And my god man, how would you get to 80 in 2 days? Level speed is pretty much proportional to how much time you put in.

actually power lvling online is absurdly fast. How it works is basically there are bots/players that run the final boss/minions for each difficultly level (generally humans in the earlier difficulties and bots in the last difficulty)

The hardest part is probably getting your character to the level where they can benefit from party exp from the boss which is about lvl 25 or so. After that all you gotta do is join games where a player is doing that over and over.

Each run takes about 2-4 minutes and you'll often gain multiple levels per game up to about lvl 85 where %exp gained is drastically reduced and amount of EXP needed to level up is pretty high.

So one really doesn't need to put an absurd amount of time to lvl up to 80 or so. Now you'd think where's the fun in that? Well it's far from the end game to be at that lvl. Getting the proper gear for your build will generally take up most of your time and barely reaching the mid-high 80's (final stats for most builds) makes you eligible to actually use your gear.

SELL IT, NOW!!!!

I've bought and sold maybe 6 copies of DII over the years, including two at once so I could have a mule account. STOP NOW, it's the most addicting game EVER... If I bought it again I'd immediately be hooked. I cant wait for D3.

If D2 is just a hobby, entertainment, I have no problems with that, but when someone starts missing classes, or calling at the job because they've suddenly got a "cold" when yesterday they could have flown with Superman just to play D2 instead is exactly when that person needs to ask a few questions and try to reason with him/herself.

That pretty much applies to all addictions right there. The specific addiction doesn't matter, whether it's gambling, drugs, alcohol, internet chatting, porno, games, whatever...

But, wow, we went really OT here, didn't we?

Indeed, and yes it's OT, and I take the entire responsibility for that, I'm sorry, but of course D2 had a huge and for a long time a negative impact on my personal social life, so even though I did mention facts the rest of my sayings is certainly biased due to my own experiences with it.

I just wish that nobody falls due to D2 like I did, it's just that and nothing else, but other than that yes D2 is indeed a good game and I do recommend buying it, the thread's creator won't regret it, I may have just dramatized things in the eyes of those who never experienced it like I and a number of others did.

i don't think there's a single NON-bot run baal run around anymore. it's strange, last time i played this game most baal-runs were run by an actual person, now it's all bots (hammerdins). i haven't done any chaos runs yet but i think that's the same way?

i used to like running my own baal runs :p now it seems pointless. though i spend most of my time MFing/keyrunning as usual
