Bought an open box EVGA 670 FTW Edition from MicroCenter, having a lot of issues....

The problem: Games run fine for a couple minutes(Once it let me play the witcher 3 for a couple hours, that was a surprise) and then this happens:

It seems to get really hot sometimes also(85+C, a couple times it hit 100c) in pretty much any game that's using most of its power(GTA5, Witcher 3, Crysis 3, etc...). I saw this happen with Youtube videos also. I am hesitant to contact EVGA because I had warranty issues with them before, it does hold its 3 year warranty according to Microcenter. I only have 3 more days to return it though to store.

I tried running the fan at 80+ in EVGA precission and MSI Afterburner but it doesn't help it seems, it is not overclocked, I never really touch that on cards. The buzzing coming from the speakers strickes me as odd, I stress tested my CPU, checked HDD, and Ram. All of my hardware is new and my PSU can handle most things, its a EVGA G2 750Watt. My airflow is also good, all my other parts are very cool.

What is this? A bad chip? Surprised Microcenter would sell a card in this condition without checking it.... :colbert:

I had to put my 460 back in cause I was sick of hard resetting my PC, I don't wanna harm my new HDD....
 
Return it before the 3 days are up. There is seriously something wrong with that card and those temps are way too high.

Even if they tested it, they probably only turned it on.
 
I also purchased an open box EVGA GTX 670 FTW from microcenter. It began artifacting the second or third time I gamed on it, I contacted EVGA and they RMA'd it without issue. In fact, I received a brand new 670, not a returned / refurb. This was probably 18 months ago, so who knows if they have any new stock at this point, but if the deal was that good, it might be worth the headache of getting EVGA to make it right. You should be able to contact them and get an answer in the next three days before returning it.

Off topic, but relevant (?), I purchased another EVGA GTX 670 FTW off the big auction site for around $100 just a couple months ago, and am loving SLI 670s. I game at 1080p (120 Hz) so the 2 Gigs of vram are sufficient for now.

Neither of my cards have ever exceeded 58C, so as has already been said, that's definitely a problem.

The last thing any gamer would want right now is a used Kepler card. Return that card to the store. If you want a used gaming card, go HD7970/7970Ghz/280X or try to find an after-market R9 290. If you absolutely need to get an Nvidia card, pick up a 960 and either keep the games or sell them off, thus making it a $150 card in the process. Alternatively, try to find a used 970.

In the Witcher 3, a $120 R9 270 is as fast as a GTX670, but when 670 came out, it competed with the HD7970!

Buying a 2GB card (670/680/770/960) is also a dangerous proposition as many games already use > 2GB of VRAM. That's why buying a used 280X/R9 290 is a much safer bet than any NV card below 970.

Whats wrong with Kepler? I looked up the benches for this card it seems near a 680/770/960 no? I mean when it does work it plays Witcher 3 and GTAV at around 40-60fps almost maxed.

Sorta wanted to stick to Nvidia(Sadly it seems some newer games are performing better on them, like FC4 for example.) but would pick up a 290 for the right price, I am no slave to branding :biggrin:.

Edit: Damn those benchmarks make me feel silly now about my purchase, I got it for 128usd after tax.

All those cards you listed get killed by a 290, or even a 280X.

I guess you haven't been following Kepler very closely since September 2014. The cards bomb in all GameWorks titles and a lot of other modern games. You absolutely do not want any 670/680/770 2GB Kepler card unless you can snag it for a very good price.

As R9 300 series is launching June 16-18th or so, be on the look out for a $200 R9 290 after-market card and snatch one up. 50% faster performance and double the VRAM over 670 and ensures that you get driver optimizations for another 2 years or so.

Ah I see....well I was happy with the performance of the 670 as odd as that is honestly, I am gonna shoot EVGA an email, maybe they will just switch it out with a 960/770(Not the best but fine for current games it seems) since the 670's I am guessing aren't even made or stocked by EVGA themselves no? If not I will return it, maybe go with a 280x....

Yeah of course RMA.

But in this case...EVGA cards are super-easy to open, I personally would just remove the HS, reapply thermal paste (MX4) and re-seat the HS. The nice thing with EVGA: If you're STILL having probs after such a procedure, you won't void your warranty even after doing this because you can STILL send it in and get it replaced.

Edit: Looks like your GPU hits 100C the second it is on? HS might not even touching the GPU or something. As said, unless you have two left hands it might possibly be easy to fix.

Yeah before I took it out to put my 460 back it went to 100c in Dead Rising 3 within 2 minutes...😡

I rather not mess with it, just in case.

Gonna call them tomorrow actually, they are closed now.

So I got my RMA approved, no word on what its being replaced with though, I mean do they even stock 670's anymore? I really don't wanna get a 760 or something back....odd that they don't say, I have to pay 12 bucks to ship it, I do hope I get at least a 670 FTW back.... :|

Anyone have experience here?

It's really their discretion on what you'll get back. None of us can give you the answer. Just cross your fingers and hope for the best!
