Superb deal. A friend's wife bought a base model a little over a year ago and probably paid 3-4 thousand more than you did, and without all the extra goodies.

The speedo location is almost certainly a nonissue. Proper use of guages means you visually survey them (ie glance at them) not stare at them. I test drove a Mini last summer and was adjusted to the speedo location by the time I left the dealer's lot.

Great little car.. I just wish they made it drive more like the Fit. Something fun to throw around.

That is a weird place for it. Perhaps they want everyone in the car (or the cop following you) to know how fast you go? ;)

Its so they can dump the sterring wheel on the right side with minimal reconfiguration
so its cheaper to make for all markets

Its good on gas and cheaper than a Fit or Versa
I chose the Versa

Good deal! If I were in the market for a new ride, I'd be test-driving a Yaris, along with the Fit.

Are the side-airbags standard for 09? I read that the safety ratings are vastly improved with them.

They still take it every now and then when they need to do some errand around town and no one has ever complained about it. One thing they do mention is the great fuel economy.

What are you getting for fuel economy? Do you have the auto or stick?

I have an automatic and am regularly getting around 47mpg. I don't drive like a maniac and on the surface streets go at the speed limit or 5 below. On the freeway, I'm usually going b/w 55-60mph and I do coast whenever I can.

AFAIK, front driver and passenger airbags, seat-mounted side airbags and rear side curtain airbags are standard on all '09 models. The NHTSA has given it pretty high safety ratings.

Damn good deal. I wanted one last year when I first started driving, then thought no. The look impressed me initially, but the retarded centre console, and 'jelly bean' shape got to me. I got to the drive the sedan version of the Yaris for a few hours. The small size was a definate plus in terms of parking and narrow roads; not for safety though.

If the odometre was digital, then I could forgive it, but analog and centre? After driving a Civic with a digital one placed right near the windshield, everything else just feels stupid.

I pick it up tomorrow. I'll post a detailed impression once I've had a chance to drive around a bit.

I got the 3door liftback in metallic meteroite. The financing is sixty months. My payements are going to be a under $200 a little. I'm going to double pay and sink next year's return into it so I think I might have it paid off by next summer or fall. :) With free oil changes (I gotta make sure that includes synthetic) that means I really just have to worry about tires and gas for a few years. Booyah.

I'll quote my post on the Yaris forums for the detailed story on how I got around to buying this.

I'm really excited!

The love of my life, a 2003 Golf, decided to abruptly die with the sudden, horrid metallic fapping of a dead lifter and a completley messed up valve. The engine is loaded with gunk, it needs new lifters, oil pressure is shot and my mechanic tells me that he doesn't want to go down "this road again." Apparently a lot of VWs from this era have this gunking up problem and you can rebuild the motor, spend $1000 in parts, 10 hours of labor and not be sure there aren't head/block issues, etc. New motor would be like $4,000. Checking the web, I see lots of owners with issues like mine, some preowned buyers finding they need a new motor after a few months. Egads.

So I'm thinking, WTF, what am I going to do? The last thing I was expecting was to have to buy a new car. I swing by the Toyota dealership near my house. It looks pretty quiet. LOTS of cars in the lot, a veritable harbor of Prius, stretching into the distance.

Turns out I qualified for a new promotion that started very recently, 0 percent financing and $500 down payment thrown on top of your down payment. I tell the saleswoman that I'm after something small, super economical, hatch, manual transmission, she finds me a Meteorite Metallic with the power package and 14 inch wheels. I test drive it, it's smooth. I like it. The display in the center is jarring, but hey, it's new. Visibility is awesome. It's more aquariumish than the Golf was and I loved driving in that glass cube. I like the styling. It fits me. It's sorta, the Toyota version of the silver hatchback. Sticker is $15,000 something, I'm kinda wondering if I should just look into a used civic for $1,000 and drive the bitch into the ground.

But I think about the fact that I'm qualified for the 0 percent financing. It was actually a surprise for me, since I had garbage credit for years and years and had to get my mother to co-sign for me on the Golf in 2003. I paid off all my debts, never missed a payment on that car, but I still had pretty lousy credit and only qualified for a couple credit cards, a discover card etc with like $300 credit limits. I used them all heavily all year, never carrying a balance and paying in full, but USING them, you know, funneling my money through them to raise my credit score.

Apparently it worked.

THe place is quiet and I can see in the saleslady's eyes that she's hungry to sell something. I was scanning this forum before I drove over there and saw the thread about March sales being WAY down. You could see the weariness of the slowdown in everyone's faces. It's rare to see a new nice car driving around with a proud happy new owner these days. People aren't even washing their cars right now (the steady drizzle this past couple of weeks hasn't helped).

I tell her I'll put $1,500 down, they're adding the $500 as part of the promotion, there's a new car buyer tax credit this year, i'll take a donation tax credit on the golf (an agency will tow away for free, too!). They cut the price down a little bit and agree to the 15 inch wheel upgrade (woohoo). Total price for the car ends up being $11,000. I pick it up on Saturday with 6 miles on the odometer. (2 of those six already belong to me from the test drive).

So, if you're on the fence and haven't been to a dealership in a few weeks, check out some of the deals going on right now.

Oh, and the dealership, Vallenti Toyota in Westerly, offers free oil changes and tire rotations for the life of the freakin car. How bout that? I gotta make sure that includes synthetic oil.

I'm really pumped. I'll miss my golf. Despite the quriky VW problems you encounter, it really was a total blast to drive. I was impressed with the Yaris, zippy, tight, fluid, quality. Simple is good. The bevy of nooks and crannies, pockets and pop-up doors (the passenger's glove box area reminds me of hungy, hungy hippos) is nifty to say the least. It's just cool, funky, well designed, and it's a freaking Toyota so maybe I won't have to deal with window motors going out and headlights that burn out every 5 months and radio reception that was awesome the day I drove off the lot and mysteriously went to hell and got just one station a few weeks later. NEVER could they figure out why that happened, the wiring was "fine" or whatever. ARGH.

So this is my introduction. I am going to take good care of this car, keep it spotless. I won't beat on it, go 80 mph for a 4 hour drive before the engine is broken in. . .go through a carwash immediatley behind some high school kid who just took his old Dodge Ram through the mudpuddle flats.

I do appreaciate the large community around this car. That's a sign to me I've just bought a good product. The information here is helpful, and, for someone committing to a new car purchase, reassuring.

Well, I also got the extended warranty at no cost, free oil changes/tire rotations for life, $500 added to my down payment, 0 percent financing. That's $3,000 off sticker plus a bunch of freebies plus an upgrade from 14 inch to 15 inch aluminum wheels.

Plus it's not a Ford. :) And I should get 35mpg pretty easily.

Don't bogart that joint.....I sure would like some of that!!!!

And to OP.... are you getting the auto because the sticker on the 3 door manual is $12,205.

I'm getting the manual. The sticker on mine was higher than the $12,205 because it had the power and convenience packages added.

It definatley will tkae some adjustment, but I think it makes sense for a few reasons. As mentioned, it saves Toyota a lot of money because they can just stick the wheel on the right or the left side without a redisgn of the entire dash, really, and makes the car easily adapted to different markets.

And I noticed during the test drive, glacing to the lower right keeps the traffic in your peripheral vision so you're actually keeping your eyes more on the road than looking down. It also eliminates the wheel potentially blocking the readouts depending on your wheel and sitting positions.

It's a fun car to drive and I've been getting great gas mileage on mine. No love for it here though on ATOT where everyone else owns a Jaguar, BMW, or Audi.

Oh yeah, checkout YarisWorld as well. It's a forum with lots of Yaris stuff.

How are the stock speakers? I'm an older dude so I'm not going to go around booming, but I'm worried the stock system is going to be cruddy. Ideally I could swap in really good speakers and be done with it, but how good/powerful is the stock head unit? The last thing I want to do is stuff an amp and sub in the back of this tiny thing. I had the Monsoon system in my Golf and I was a little spoiled by that.

Reading the post that you qouted, are you seriously donating a 2003 Golf because it needs $1,000 of engine work? In working condition that car has a market value of 5-7k, fix the car, then dump it. Just taking the tax deduction on a car that could easily be made drivable (regardless of whether you want it anymore or not) really doesn't make sense.

It needs a whole new motor. My mechanic said that he could sink $1,000 in parts AND spend 10 hours in labor only to give me a car that has no guarentee of block damage or having the same problem a month or two down the road. The alternative is a new motor, which would be $4,500 or so. Not exactly something worth doing with so many miles on it already. Plus it has a nice dent and a spider crack on the windshield. It's a parts car now and I'm not in the mood to deal with selling it or anything.

The stock speakers are decent. They sound better than the Infinity Kappa component set and 3-way set I put in the front and back of my other car.

I did have to add a small sub. though because there really isn't any bass w/ the stock speakers. I don't like explosive bass that shakes things in cars that are next to me and rattles the panels in my car so this 8" shallow Pioneer sub. was good enough (actually, more than enough) for me.

Here's what I did w/ the sub.:

That plugs into the head unit? That's very slick -- exactly the sort of thing I'd want. Damn, I wish you were my neighbor. I'd cook you a mean ass steak on the grill and we could hang out and drink beers.

Oh the sub. is connected to a small Pioneer mono amp. (mounted under the front passenger seat) and the amp. to the Pioneer HU (shown in one of my pictures above). You'll need a line output converter to connect an amp. to the stock head unit.

Until Ford can prove to me that a car of theirs can last 10+ years with the same amount or less problems than cars of Honda/Toyota, I will likely not consider buying one.

Problem is, while their newer cars MAY be reliable in the long run, only time can tell. You get what you pay for usually.

I've driven Fords my whole life, they always last at least 250k miles. On my last one, other than normal maintenance (oil, plugs, brakes and tires), I had to replace the alternator twice, the clutch once and the starter once. Are Toyota's more reliable than that?

Our Ford Bronco is now 14 years old. It just had the radiator replaced due to a blockage. The cost to clean it out was just as much as getting a shiny new one.. Other than that the truck has only had one break pads, (only twice actually), batteries, and tires. Everything else on the truck is original.

IN REALITY A 10% DIFFERENCE

Among nameplates, the research showed the survival rate for vehicles older than 15 years from offshore-based manufacturers including Toyota and Honda had shot up to 53.9 per cent last year

North American-based General Motors, Ford and Chrysler also had improved their survival rate for those aging vehicles to 43.7 per cent

If it cost more than 10% to get into that Honda or Toyota your getting screwed :)
