Bought a Seek thermal imager

This is my SDR (Software Defined Radio) and what looks like 111 degrees Fahrenheit. It's not too bad of an imager, the resoltion isn't as good as a FLIR, but there is a company on eBay that sells a better lens I may end up buying to make the image better. This unit can see in several color palettes including black & white.

Now if I only had 9500 bucks I'd buy these and latter these. The NVs are about 2500.

Was in the backyard and heard racoons so decided to do a thermal on the little bastrads. I had just put wild bird seed out today and they haven't been here in weeks and now they show up. I counted 5. https://youtu.be/a8apwDhQLIc

I filtered eBay results to the cheapest and found a guy selling a few new for Android at $160 OBO. So I made him an offer of $150, and to my surprise it automatically accepted. I wonder now if I could have made an offer of $140. Not too shaby considering they are about $200.

I was going to buy this, but it doesn't have the capability of capturing video unless you want to step up to the $300 unit.

I just went to eBay and filtered the list from cheapest to most expensive.

Looks like the seller I bought from sold all of his. He had two or three. I definitely did get a great deal now that I look at the current prices.

I should mention that on Android you have to make sure your USB port in the phone is positioned in the direction so that the thermal camera faces out and not toward you otherwise you will see yourself. I heard Apple doesn't have this issue.

The FLIR I think would have better resolution and it has its own power supply built in. Where is the Seek uses your phone's battery.

I've toyed with getting one too, but I hate the fact that it depends on a phone. I'd hate to find out it's not compatible with mine, or an update in the future breaks it etc... From what I heard the plug also faces the wrong way on the Nexus 4 so I'd have to mess with making a custom adapter etc.

If ever I feel the need for one, I might splurge and get a Flir E4 or something.

That's what worries me. I have a Samsung S4. But won't my current App stay the same even if there's a new version since I don't have the newer OS? I mean it simply won't update.

I've been using the FLIR ONE, it's pretty decent. I like the photo overlay feature with the secondary camera, which lets you see the picture better. Here's a shot of my DIY pizza oven:

Downside is it maxes out at 248F. Anything above that, it simply says ">248F" I ended up using a cheap IR gun to measure the floor temp of the oven & found a 1000F-capable thermometer on Amazon for the air temp. Only other complaint is that it plugs directly into the Lightning port on the newer iPhones, so you have to remove your case to use it.

no it doesnt let you see through like that. you are thinking of infrared, and you can make one yourself for less than $50 as seen in this vid

That's pretty cool, and all you have to do is remove a filter. Huh.

A lot of stupid things... plus checking electrical stuff, water leaks, insulation or air leak issues, discovered where the heat vents inside the walls were, and other home related things.

Then there's doing non-contact temperature estimates for water and the stove, temperatures inside electronics.

This can see up to a 1000 feet I guess. But I notice that the moon and Jupiter show up as a very faint heat source.
