Bought a new toy, FLIR i7

Can I use that to check if a turkey is done? ie, point it and check for proper doneness and for other cooking purposes.

Anyhow pretty amazing how cheap these things are. Back in the days they required Argon gas to cool them (or liquid nitrogen for the oldest tech)

now you get one that weighs less then a pound and looks like something out of a star trek movie.

When it arrives I will post unboxing pics, and some images from it 🙂

Now use it to find everyone in your neighborhood growing "indoor vegetables".

😀

So this thing could detect that? I never messed with one of these things but I can see it as a pretty neat gadget to play with.

Anyhow I got it for 1895 for the person asking. the new 140x140 i7 model.

Yes ... check out YouTube for some ideas. You could very easily pin point those houses. Best to do it at night!

Very nice! I thought about buying one once, since I had to rent one anyway, and it's only about 4x the cost to buy outright.

Lots of fun seeing where your joists are on a hot day, or seeing which parked cars had been driven recently, or seeing where the heat leaks are in your house.

Of course, once I dumped the pictures, I realized that the last people to rent it hadn't cleared THEIR pictures after using it. Most were pretty innocuous, but there was at least one naked guy on there. D:

You must be quite well off, cause $1900 for a little toy gadget sure ain't what I'd consider cheap lol.

I have one at work. It's pretty cool to look around and see how different materials have different emissivities.
For example, when looking at a metal with high emissivity (rough finish aluminum), you can see your thermal reflection.
It's just like looking into a mirror, except when looking at it without the camera, it is just a matte finish.

Be aware of this problem, as the heat signature could be a reflection from another nearby heat source.
The manual says to put a piece of electrical tape on the surface of highly emissive materials to get a more accurate reading.

I'll have to point Gillbot at this thread. Might actually be enough to finally get him to post something for the first time in like forever.

You can find cold/hot spots in your house to help seal up drafts. (under doors, around windows, etc.)
Look at your electric panel to check for troublesome breakers or loose connections (they are hotter than the rest).
Locate hot components in electronics without tearing apart.

We use ours in thermal testing to get a quick baseline temperature or to find hot spots before placing thermocouples.

I don't think so since it can't see the internal temps, just surface.

Could you use one while hunting to spot deer (or other targets) that were well blended into their surroundings? i.e. 50 yards or so away in brush?

Yeah, I think it would.
I just tried mine out here and I can see a person standing ~50' away perfectly.

Sensors on those are only 60x60 and up to 140x140. So at a distance it's just going to be a blob. And run about 9hz refresh rates.

You can get some of these running SVGA resolution and ranges of over a mile, with great identification under 1,000 yards. But then again they are 10x as much as the handheld guy 😀

Cool, now everybody is so caught up in the "iXXXX" craze that I can't even differentiate between totally unrelated products anymore.

Been messing with it since yesterday. Found a leaking vent, bad insulation spots and discovered two spots my dog pissed on. funny thing is it was two small spots I did not notice until I used this FLIR gun.

Evidence, small pee spot.

Leaking Vent.

Anyhow it comes in a real cool pelican type case with everything inside.

No ghosts but defiantly gonna deal with the Vent and have pros fix it, get insulation fixed etc..

Neat gadget, and good for dog pee detection.

Guess what this is 🙂
