Bought a new house

I moved into a new house last month and had my phone/DSL service (Windstream) switched to the new house.

I was surprised when they called and said that the new house was a Fiber install and I should have been told about it when I bought the house (I wasn't). Anyway they came out and installed the Fiber which took about 2 days. They kept saying it was new to them and we were only the 3rd install in the area. They were on the phone for help almost constantly, and three different techs worked on the install.

Even with the Fiber I am still limited to 3 meg on the download. A speed increase to 12 meg is coming in a few months. What I'm worried about is if the install was done correctly. I've looked online at some pics (mostly Verizon Fiber installs) and I haven't seen an install like mine at all. However the speed is fine for 3 meg and the phone service works great.

The house was already pre-wired for 4 jacks, and the wires were left bundled on the outside of the house where the outside box needed to be installed. The tech(s) ran a line to the house, and then installed the box on the outside of the house. Here is the part I'm worried about... They put a power supply in my garage and drilled a hole though the wall into the garage. They pulled the bundle of wires from outside of the house into the garage. Beside of the power supply they put a small box where they hooked the outside wires into. It looks like the wires just snap into it, and the power supply is hooked up to this somehow. A new set of wires was then ran from this small box outside to the outside box and hooked up.

It worked fine, but I was worried about the exposed wires in the garage. After a lot of talk they finally agreed to cover the small box with something. A tech came out a week later and installed a gray cover over the exposed wires. However you can still grab the wires from the bottom and rip them out.

Everything seems to work great, but I'm worried that I was given a "bad" install. I want everything to be right so when the speed increase comes so I want have any problems.

I don't have a camera with me or I would post some pics... I'll try to get to it tomorrow.

Sorry for the confusing discription, but thanks for the help.

I have called Windstream to ask about the install, and I'm told its fine. Customer service is completely clueless about anything to do with a Fiber install. They did install a new jack into the computer room that has a network and phone jack in it. The router just plugs into the jack with no need for a modem anymore (which I like).

I'll try to get some pics tommorow.

They didn't wire anything into the rooms. The home was pre-wired when I bought it. Not sure if they were cat5e or not. The wires that were in the home were coated on the outside with blue plastic. Sorry but thats all I know about the wires.

The jack in the computer room was wired for just a phone jack. They took that jack off and messed with with wires inside the jack. A new jack was put in that has a phone jack and a jack to hook my router to.

UPDATE: After looking though some Google stuff it appears that the small box I have next to the power supply that they covered up is a punch block. Although the one I have is a lot smaller than the ones shown.

Run fiber for a 3, or even 12mbit connection? That kind of makes me sad just thinking of the wasted potential.

Fiber to the house? Sweet. If you open the box does the light shine out and that small kid show up like in the commercials?

Not sure what to tell you about the install. Mabey let it ride for a while until more people get it and then start inquring about it?

Yeah there are only two houses with people living in them now (new development). The other house has digital phone though Time Warner. No clue when anyone else will move in. The housing market isn't very good in my area right now.

I think its just a punch block from the images I found on Google. Although I'm not sure why they would use one. Maybe to decide where the broadband goes, etc...? I know the router will only work on the one jack in the computer room. The rest of the jacks are wired for phone only.

Wow. It's going to be ironic when you get bitch slapped with the ban stick.

I've had similar questions asked in the past that are in the "Off Topic Forum" and usually ask similar questions like this one....... The first response is usually from a Lifer or someone that's been here a long time that says: don't waste our time, post in another Forum!!

I'm agreeing with you 100%, but what I'm trying to say is that when I make a Thread and someone responds like that....... Nothing happens! No one gets warnings or a ban.

Nothing to do with the Topic, but HELL, when has it stopped anyone else in OT from doing the same DAMN thing?!?!?!?!?

I hope the fucker does get BANNED!

Surface mounting the 66 block and demarc gear is not unusual.
The upside is, no connections out in the weather with potential for moisture, corrosion and signal loss on the copper side.
Hopefully it is not too inconvenient a location for you. There was no choice on that location, the cables in the house go there with only so much slack to spare.
I won't call you a bitch, but now comes the "pride of ownership" part.
Man up and make a nice plywood cover for the gear:)
Edit: post the pics, give a cable count or whatever. You may have the potential for a nice wired network using that CAT5e, if they are all home runs and you can use one cordless phone.

The question I have to ask is, what's the likely hood of someone goes around your garage and rips out expose wires? Are you saying there are no exposes wire at your house or that wire ripping is a common occurrence at your house? While "bitching" might be harsh, but your post comes across as a big whine.

Exactly. There is no problem so stop looking for one.

If a higher service becomes available it is the providers responsibility to maintain the line to your home so they'll fix if there is a problem. The only concern is if the guys haven't worked with or terminated fiber before. If so you could have a lot of loss, but again the provider can measure this and fix if needed.

I guess you could try and move it to another room, but I wouldn't recommend it with a live fiber cable. Try and move the box and the cables to the upper portion of the wall, ensure the cables aren't crimped and tack them to the wall, build a nice shelf and call it a day.

EDIT: Had to add location
