Personally, I'd worry less about the gear and more about your ability on the bike. Improve and work on that and it will do a lot more toward improving your chances of surviving on a motorcycle than just gearing up will.

yeah, skill on the bike will be far more a determining factor than any gear, though i'd still like to have a good setup just in case something happens. i'm going home this weekend, so hopefully i can get it in running shape and then take it around the block or something like that.
