I just bought a Toshiba Satellite L505, which has 4 GB DDR3 memory, 250 hard drive, dual core 2.2 Hz, and Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M.

Ok, so based on my research this laptop is not too bad right, so I thought I would do some gaming on it since there's a bunch of games I've wanted to play for a long time. Now I don't plan on playing games like Crysis or Starcraft 2 or Battlefield BC 2 or any super HD graphics games. To give you an idea here's some games I plan on playing:

Fable the lost chapters, dark messiah of might and magic, mount and blade, baldur's gate 1 &2, gothic 2, mass effect 1, everquest, etc.

That's why I've come to you anandtech community, should I not waste my money purchasing these games if I won't be able to play them or do you think my laptop can handle these games? Also, I plan on playing these games with a controller, are most PC games compatible with a controller?

Should be golden, although DMMM might be a little laggy on higher settings.

Get Torchlight, it's a great Diablo type game that I know for a fact will run well on that video chipset. Be vary wary of newer titles obviously, grab demos if you can to assess performance. The 4500M video isn't that great, but it's not quite as useless as some make it out to be, and of course lots of classic games will run just fine on it.

If you liked the BG series, give PlaneScape: Torment a go. It is the only game I can think of that rivals BG2.

> mass effect 1,

That seems a bit recent for Intel integrated "3D".

GOG.com, maybe a nice Fallout 1 - 2- Tactics instead?

dude i think you are asking too much of that intel IGP, if you wanted to game at all you should have bought a lappy with a better GPU.

Anything from the past 3-4 years that's 3D is not going to happen. Fallout 3, Oblivion, Mass Effect, etc. Even Half-Life 2 is pushing it.

The GMA 4500MHD, while not a terrible IGP, is NOT meant for gaming. You can play older and 2D stuff on it with ease, but don't expect much from games made in the past few years.

Not to mention a 2.2Hz processor is slower than today's tech by about 9 orders of magnitude

Try some PS1 emulators

the CPU wont be a problem its the GPU, i have a T6600(2.2Ghz dual core, probably same as OP) CPU in my laptop but with a ATI 4570 GPU and it works fine for pretty much any game thats not super graphics intensive(like crysis, Stalker, etc)

Games i have played fine include: Burnout paradise, Mass effect 1 and 2, COH, L4d 1 and 2, Half life 2, oblivion even runs alright, GTA 4 is even playable but not at max setting. Bioshock also runs pretty well.

Dual core 2.2 is not that bad. I have a desktop with a decent graphics card and I can play almost any game out at lower resolutions.

However, that laptop will be severly limited by the integrated GPU.

^Sorry guys, I was just being an ass, it said 2.2Hz not 2.2GHz. I know 2.2GHz is fine.

Still won't be able to do much with the 4500 integrated graphics.

Woosh!

I have Torchlight on mine and it runs fine if you like Diablo type games. Another old game that runs fine with the 4500 is Jagged Alliance 2 and its predecessors, JA1, Unfinished Business, and Deadly Games (Get them from GoG.com). JA2 v1.13 adds a lot of new things to make the old JA2 game fun. Plenty of mods for it too.

you are screwed, if returning it is an option do that. I got my lappy with the 4570 for $650 Canadian, not bad for a 15.6" with a touch screen, and can play most games.

As others have said you are pretty much boned in the gaming department with that IGP, and unfortunately there is no way to upgrade it. Mass effect 1 will not run ( and if it does it'll be a slide show). Stick to games more than 5 years old (aside from torchlight, that'll run on just about anything), and casual games like plants VS zombies, or peggle. If you are really looking forward to playing newer titles I would recommending returning the laptop, and getting something with an nvidia or ATI GPU.

As stated, you'll never be able to run games very well with an integrated graphics chip like that. It's there to run your display really, nothing more.

Its not entirely hopeless. There are still some good older games out there you can run. You can try the original Far Cry and any other games that came out around 2004.

Check Machinarium, World of Goo and VVVVVV, you might like those games.

I love puzzlequest and that laptop should handle it fine

Yes, Puzzle Quest and its sequel Puzzle Quest: Galactrix are great simple games.

Another nice suggestion, Plants vs Zombies is a fun game.
Also, I would recommend an integrated ATI more than other brands. But that's another topic.
