I got a Taurus PT 24/7 Pro DS 9MM. Holds 17 in the magazine.

I picked up a box of 115 grain ammo from Walmart yesterday but was wondering where is a good place to get more variety in grains and better pricing also. I want to get a few hundred rounds of each grain type and head out to the range to put a few hundred rounds through it and see which I like best.

cheapest 9mm ammo I have seen is the CCI Blazer at Academy...box of 50 rounds is around $6 or $7 now...last year, the same box was around $4.

all other calibers (.40 , .22, etc) are at least $10 for a box of 50...

China and India are scooping brass and copper, etc which has caused ammo prices to skyrocket...

Online sources will have the most variety (Cheaper than dirt, Cabela's, Dan's, etc...).

Though the grain and type of bullet has more to do with your intended purpose. Plinking with the cheapest 115 grain you can find is fine as long as it goes bang every time. For self defense I look to the 124 or 147 grain hollow points. I got a really good deal on a bunch of Winchester Ranger +P+ 147 JHP's a while ago which is what my 9mm in the night stand is loaded with. If using hotter loaded ammo check the handgun's manual to make sure it can handle it or search online some.

Mag not clip, btw ;)

I don't seem to have any Academy stores around me. Are you or is anyone else on here aware of places that sell online for less?

Is it even possible to buy ammo online these days?

The box of 50 I got for Walmart was $10.

I know Bass Pro Shops/Outdoor World does have sales every now and then also but when I was there a box of 50 was $13 at best (was where I bought the gun from).

Mag? Why?

All these new terminology to learn :p I was reading up on SA/DA vs. SA vs. DA the other night and realized I know so little about the terminology of guns. My father in-law is a gun collector though so he's been teaching me more and more. I'm going to the range with him this weekend to test it out for the first time and was wanting a variety of grains just to see how the feel.

winchester white box 100rd value packs at wal-mart is hard to beat.

ammoman.com may have some cheaper ammo, if you want to buy in bulk.

I did not know Taurus made a handgun that takes a clip, that is awesome. I have seen versions that take magazines, but not clips.

Magazine.

The difference in grains won't be noticeable to effect your shooting. A hotter loaded ammo with more muzzle flash would though.

Pretty good primer in clip vs. magazine.

They have 1000 rounds shipped for $179 in 9mm, as well as other deals.

What kind of jacket did that have for that price?

I'd be open to buying this much bulk as long as it was quality ammo.

I'll second the Winchester white box 100 round vaulue packs from Wal-mart. Only feed it decent ammo with brass casings. None of that cheap aluminum or steel casing ammo. You should also but a box of whatever defense load you use through the gun every trip to the range.

FMJ, 115 grain. Looks like a steel casing? Can't tell. I have bought a lot of ammo from them for my Mossin that I use for plinking. My buddy bought 1000 rounds for his .308. Never had a problem with them. But obviously different strokes for different folks. :)

Wolf uses steel cases. This ammo used to have extraction problems in some guns before they switched the coating from lacquer to polymer. Haven't heard of anyone having trouble with it lately other than finding some to buy.

for 9mm i haven't been able to find anything cheaper than Dick's Sporting Goods here in PA, and even that has gone up quite a bit. Last time I bought some it was $9.99 a box if you bought a case (10 boxes). it was like $12.99 a box if you bought each box individually.

They even beat all of the online places people have mentioned by a few dollars the last time I checked.

$99.99 / 500rd is not cheaper than $179 / 1000rd. :p

Not bad for local pricing, though. Ammo is way too expensive these days- .223 went from ~$6.50/20 to ~$9.50/20 since January.. :(

As mentioned Walmart has 100 rounds for around 17 or 18 although it used to only be 15 a year ago!

Not the fist time I've read on here that Dick's is a good place but when I checked the ones around me they only carry hunting ammo. Never have seen any that have hand gun ammo.

I own .45s..no $17-18 for me. :(

.223 is expensive there and they don't carry 7.62x54r, so all I buy there is .22 and 12ga.

I am sort of a gun noob so I don't know the performance differences, but I do know that my local range will not let you fire steel-cased bullets. Brass only.
