Bought a GT240 to replace my 8600GT, stupid move?

Don't beat yourself up or stress about it. Yes, a 240GT is almost exactly a 9600GT, and a 9800GT is exactly an 8800GT. There is a 10-20% difference between the two, depending on the situation. That's not worth getting worked up about. You'll save the price difference in power over the coming year or two.

And if the 9800GT is a "green" model there is even less of a difference performance wise. In fact, that may be what the salesguy was saying. Most "green" 9800GT are clocked at 550 mhz -- a 10% deficit vs. a stock (not to mention my factory 650 mhz version) which goes a long way to eliminating the performance gulf between the two. At $64 vs $85 AR for those two cards I'd go for the GT240 myself.

I second the advice to OC both your processor and the GT240. And think of this as a cheap learning experience -- always do research beforehand and NEVER listen to a "computer expert" whose best career option is to work retail at roughly minimum wage.

hmmmm...how would i go about over-clocking my CPU?

ive had this computer for nearly 3 years so i don't want to risk damaging the cpu...if that is at all possible.

ive tested my card on L4D2.

i average about ~40 FPS with max settings including x16/8 on AA/AS.

sometimes it will dip below 10 on intense sequences but it is not very common.

is this about right for my card?

would a quad-core CPU boost my performance in BC2 other than purchasing a new GPU?

newegg has a AMD phenom 9850 for ~$80. i fucking hate AMD though..

Well at least you didn't get a return wrapped as new with a PCI USB adapter card inside of it.

I'd say you got off lucky buying from Fry's.

quadcore probably would not boost your performance since you're likely bottlenecked by the video card. If you were getting 40 fps average in BC2 then your cpu maybe a bottleneck keeping you from going higher.

i see...

im not sure if this is relevant, but since i got the gt240 my CPU has been running more than usual.

typically in firefox my cpu never goes above 10% when i had the 8600, but now it is at 60%+ with ONE browser window open and nothing else.

wtf?!

edit: oh, and video is stuttering. both in-game and internet.

never did this with the 8600GT. so bizarre..

no advice?

my cpu keeps jumping from 8% all the way to 70% in a matter of seconds with nothing running, not even firefox.

this just started happening when i installed the gt240.

does the gpu affect the cpu in any way?

What kind of CPU do you have? Stock or aftermarket heatsink?

Gpu wouldn't cause the CPU spike. You probably just now noticed it or some newly installed program or virus is working the CPU.

It's weird. It jumps from 0% all the way to 70%.

I'm also using an unusual amount of memory for vista. Ordinarily I'm at 600-900mb for just firefox, but now I'm at 1.2-1.5!

My cpu is Intel CD 6420 @ 2.13 ghz.

Did you install the stock nVidia drivers or the ones provided by Galaxy with the card on the CD? How about any other apps on the CD which may have been automatically installed?

I would just stick to reference drivers from http://www.nvidia.com and make sure you uninstalled the old ones first.

Uhh...no I didn't even realize it came with a CD until you reminded me LOL!

I went on Nvidia and installed the drivers from there. I don't think I uninstalled the 8600GT drivers.

How do I uninstall drivers anyways??

Should I have used the CD instead?

No its generally better to avoid the CD included with graphics cards because A) usually the drivers are slightly outdated B) there is potential they will install a bunch of crap you don't want/need as a bundle in.

This could cause your memory usage to go haywire / having a bunch of new processes running you don't want or need. You did the correct thing by not using the Galaxy CD.

Now, depending on how recent your 8600GT drivers were, you would want to go into the Control Panel and choose 'Nvidia Drivers' and then select Uninstall - Uninstall Graphics Drivers only.

I would do this once again before reinstalling the latest drivers. Remember to do 2 reboots after uninstallation to make sure they are gone.
