Don't beat yourself up or stress about it. Yes, a 240GT is almost exactly a 9600GT, and a 9800GT is exactly an 8800GT. There is a 10-20% difference between the two, depending on the situation. That's not worth getting worked up about. You'll save the price difference in power over the coming year or two.
And if the 9800GT is a "green" model there is even less of a difference performance wise. In fact, that may be what the salesguy was saying. Most "green" 9800GT are clocked at 550 mhz -- a 10% deficit vs. a stock (not to mention my factory 650 mhz version) which goes a long way to eliminating the performance gulf between the two. At $64 vs $85 AR for those two cards I'd go for the GT240 myself.
I second the advice to OC both your processor and the GT240. And think of this as a cheap learning experience -- always do research beforehand and NEVER listen to a "computer expert" whose best career option is to work retail at roughly minimum wage.
