Both parents canned in last 3 wks ... 1700 miles apart ...

My parents live over 1,700 miles apart.

About 3 weeks ago my mother was let go after 15 years in the same, not-high-paying position.

Today my dad was let go, he's the #2 guy in his line of work ... after working like a madman for 2 years (pushed more than ever before), and psychotic levels over the last month, he got let go today. 10 days after successful format change. Cut throat style.

Both parents let go within 3 weeks ... totally different industries, parts of the country, skill levels, salaries, etc ... but hey, the news says the economy is getting better ...

Oh, and 2 days before his 60th birthday.

🙁

I think your sample size is a little small... That being said I wish the best of luck to you and your family and I'm sorry to hear that.

When did the news say the economy is getting better? Unemployment is projected to increase despite other factors possibly improving.

Certainly your parents are; I'm not so sure about the rest of us.

No, the big bureaucrats who are leeching off the taxpayer, as well as the politicians in Washington are sure living it up.

People who actually work for a living aren't though. GG n00b.

They are starting to change their tune now but for a while they were singing that the recession ending is just around the corner and all signs look to the economy improving. Of course, they are still parroting the ridiculous 'create or save x amount of jobs' line from the administration.

Here is a visual aid on how craptacular the stimulus has been.

Around 300k workers were let go in may. projections were about 500k. It was the smallest drop since last september too.

It looks like we may have bottomed out.

I've been self-employed for a while but have often craved a normal job with a steady paycheck due to the hard work put in and sometimes meek returns coming out. But hearing stories like this make me feel very thankful and much more fortunate that I deserve.

I wish your parents the best in finding new jobs. They sound like loyal hard working people.

You must work for a living. Can you share your "I AM FUCKED" story?

Sorry to hear that; these things usually work themselves out, sometimes for the better.
Are they in a position to retire early?

We always land on our feet. Unfortunately, neither are in a position to retire early. I think this may be better for my dad. Will definitely ease the stress he's been dealing with from being overworked at this position.

Shit. Every night the news says things are rebounding. We've hit the bottom, new plans are making things better. Doesn't matter what channel.

I'm amazed at the market and news. All I see are things setting us up to be in a worse place.

The recession won't be over until the jobs start coming back, and that's not now nor right around the corner imo. They keep touting the 'slower increase' in job losses, which might be better than accelerated job loss, but is a complete marketing scam in touting the end of the recession.

Companies do not care about their employees and consider a means to an end (profit). Social responsibility need not apply. It shouldn't be the case, but this is what the business environment has shifted towards the past two decades.

I think they are 🙂 ... they are the old breed who really put in a hard days work ...

Certainly work harder than I've ever had to. I've been lucky to do something that comes somewhat naturally ...

Thanks for the good wishes all ...

I hope every thing work out for the better. Your parents are getting older and finding a new job wil be more challenging.

Best of luck.

i think we've seen the worse of the recession, and we should should see recovery towards the end of the year/begining of next.

Companies are hiring more than they were at the begining of this year; unemployment is decreasing, the stock market is recovering

a good friend of mine, general manager, was blindsided with a boot. only he was lucky enough to get transferred to another division and a job with lesser responsibility. the thing of it is his company is making money and his division is one of the most profitable. sometimes i think the big wigs just get on the firing bandwagon because every one else is doing it.

you think so? sometimes it's politics; cuts have to be made, but it's often based on a popularity contest
