Both my DSL modem and Router want to be firewalls. UGH.

So I have a bellsouth supplied wirespeed dual connect, and a belkin router, which works alright.

The modem wants to act as a DHCP server. I can't uncheck this option until I disable IP passthrough. I'd like to set it the IP passthrough device to my router, but argh.

This is basically stupid.

I'll copy and paste some screens from my router in hopes that someone can explain how to make it work the way I want. I want to have the modem just be a modem, and be able to configure a 'virtual server' (my router's term for port forwarding) and be able to have people connect to me. This hasn't been working, although it used to reliably.

Put in the Router gateway in your Modem gateway, the 192.168.2.1

I think I fixed it- changed the modem settings from ppoe to bridge ethernet, then put the ppoe settings into my router.

The only thing I'm noticing is the net might be a little laggier- not sure yet. When I put my IP into a browser, I get the router page, instead of nothing, so now I know the modem has become transparent. ROXOR.

=p I used broadband reports and found the same guide. Although NOW I am experiencing a problem I had once before, and posted about here. Uploads aren't working. I can't upload files through a web interface (yousendit) and I'm pretty sure FTP won't work either, along with aim transfers.

aaand entering my modem via 192.168.1.254 isn't working now.

I don't like this.

2 ways to unbridge your modem.
1. Statically assigning your computer an ip address of 192.168.1.10 - subnet 255.255.255.0 - Default gateway 192.168.1.254 (optional). Then plug directly into modem. http://192.168.1.254 should bring up the modem's GUI. Then you can reverse the bridge setting. Make sure you set it back to "obtain automatically" once unbridged.
2. Some modems have a factory reset button somewhere. Reset it and it'll be back to factory default settings. Make sure you put your PPPoE uid/pw back in and take PPPoE off the router.

Bridging it should have solved all your problems. Did you make any special changes in the router besides PPPoE and port fowarding? Any software firewalls on the computer?

Can't think of any special changes to the router, and I run Kerio..

Closed Kerio, it works fine. What the hell..

Edit: I reopen kerio and now it works too, this is ridiculous.

Ok, I can hardly define what makes what work, and what doesn't.

Some of my internet apps will not work without the firewall off. Some of them will work with it on. Some of them seem to flip coins to decide from time to time. The connection isn't as good and it seems to drop every now and then.

And I haven't even been able to test if the port forwarding to my PC is working (although all things lead me to believe that it should).

Screw this. I'm going to reset my modem and router back to the prior config, and then puzzle over how to make the network function properly AND let me pass traffic back to my PC.

Ok. Time has passed.

The connection seems more stable, however:

I still can't transmit files over FTP. The transmission will slow to 0 after 8-16k have been transmitted.

I was unable to submit this message until I turned off my software firewall. (shorter postings work other places)

I still often have difficulties uploading files through web interfaces.

On AIM direct connect, an inserted file will often stop after exactly 8k has been transferred.

I'd LIKE to be able to make sure people can make it past my dsl modem + router. Here are my prospective solutions:

1) Buy a combination DSL Modem / Wireless Router(or switch)
2) Use my old SiS motherboard and spare NIC card in combination with what will likely be a new but small HD, additional NIC, and a cheap monitor to create a PC that is directly after the DSL modem, which I can perform operations that need to be outside the router, and then have the router below this PC.
3) Figure out SOME WAY to make everything work the way I want with the hardware I want.

Hardware involved (again)

Westell DSL modem with internal NAT and DHCP (bellsouth supplied)
Belkin "high speed mode" Wireless G router currently using cat5
Two windows XP systems
Bonus: Netgear 32bit PCI WG311 v2 wireless g card (never got it to work)

Are there any ideas on what I should do?
