If you saw trucks in the neighborhood and your phone and DSL is out, it's a safe bet (and a MUCH more rational explaination) that someone veered off the road and nailed a pole or a junction box.

Relax. You're not their only customer and they're not going to jump through hoops just to shut you up. Let them do their job because that's all they're paid to do.
