Im working on a Sony Vio system and the problem is the CDROMs do not work. Windows sees both units, but the device has the yellow icon for each. I tried a different IDE controller and same results. Tried a different ribbon with same results- I removed both devices from the device manager and let windows pick them back up.. checked the jumpers to make sure they were correct.. this is a rather new system.. i have a norton 2004 cd which i booted off of to check the system.. im unsure of how good that actually is? does anyone recommend anything as far as the CDROMs not working and does anyone know any good antivirus software that I could use without installing to scan, and the software would have to be something that is frequently updated for new viruses.

the mcafee i noticed was expired.. also when i goto shutdown the system, i get wupdate.com or wupdater.com end now option.. i thought this was spyware or something along those lines (if im remembering correctly)

sorry for the long post, but you guys always seem to be able to help me out, thanks in advance,

you could try this:

Open regedit and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Now delete the keys:
LowerFilters and UpperFilters. NB only one key may be present but still delete it.

Now reboot and your optical drives should function again.

OK.. thanks what do these keys supposed to filter?

thanks for your post.

Resolution: Ya, that worked great, you saved a customer from having to do a restore..lol.. but now you got me wondering what that filters, and how you knew that it was there. Any other secrets like that in the registry would greatly be appreciated.
