My windows installation began having major problems, so I thought I would reinstall windows xp. It works fine, I can reinstall it. A week or 2 later I want to reinstall it again for various reasons on another drive, and now it wont let me boot up into the windows xp installation! neither cdrom is detected when booting up (yes i changed the settings in the bios), but they are detectable in windows. My windows installation was on the D drive, so I formatted the C drive forgetting the boot.ini is on there, so now I can't get into windows, and now I just noticed neither of my cdroms are working.
Is this a motherboard problem or what exactly?!? What should I do? :[
Thanks,
David

Could be a bad cable, or the IDE Bus Controller screwed. Common problem the controllers going on motherboards in my experience.

so what could I do to fix this? would flashing the bios do anything, or do I need to buy a new motherboard?

No if the controller is screwed that means the motherboard is screwed. You need either a new cable or mobo.

Dont eliminate something like the PSU though either. Perhaps no power, or not enough power is getting to the CD ROM drives?

Try and eliminate possibility's then re-post with more information :)

well i believe it is getting power because i can always open and close the cdrom drives and the lights work and all, my computer just does not detect them.

with the cables - at times the cdroms work again, and sometimes they dont. the computer doesnt detect the floppy drive at times either ...so thats a bit weird

unless there's anyting im missing im gonna go ahead and get a new mobo and cpu and ram (my comp is old, sdram, slot a cpu  ) ..MSI nforce2 i guess

thanks for the help : ]

Try a different power supply. Even if you have power, it could still be going bad. When things start acting funny, that's the first thing to check because most computer problems are caused by inadequate power supplies.

Still I think if the system is old, it might be time for an upgrade to an nForce2 ;)
