Boston Bruins National Anthem -- done right

Ya know how the Boston Bruins did the National Anthem last night? That's how it should be more or less every time. No special singers. No special music. Just the fans, the players, the coaches... everyone singing loudly.

I think that some stadiums should try it for a game or two. Just simple/quiet music and the words on the screen. Seems to me that if the place was virtually silent, most people would figure it out and start singing along -- loud and proud. Sure footage of the Bruins game is humbling and gives you goose bumps, but that's what should happen every time the song is sung -- regardless of a tragedy or not

Full disclosure: I was at the Brewers game last night. Did not sing a word.

And yes, I know I sound like the 1988 Season 4, Episode 11 of Mr. Belvedere. But Bob Uecker was right then as I am now.

It's definitely a noble thought, unfortunately it won't happen in our current society.

Why do we sing it at all at sports events? I'd leave it to the Olympics and other international sporting events. Singing at the Bruins game last night was also acceptable, and the way it was done far more poignant.

I don't mind singers who just sing the anthem straight, without all the bullshit inflection.

This. I'm not trying to say it is bad to sign the national anthem at sporting events. It is just so half-hearted at almost every event I have been to. By the sounds of it, the Bruins national anthem wasn't, which is great. I have the same notion for 'take me out to the ballgame' being sung. No one actually likes it and it sounds like crap every time. Singing at games in the US is just awful, teams should make up their own rally songs and get them going.

The last thing that should happen is to have people resent singing the national anthem. Which having to hear it/sign it at every sporting event is what ends up happening for some.

Yeah, I don't see why I need to listen to or sing that song every time I go to a baseball game or a hockey game. But god forbid anyone ever publicly question it. Their hatred for America will be confirmed.

Edit: I can see doing it after something like what happened in Boston. Only problem is that then it never dies. They've been singing "God bless America" in Yankee Stadium for almost twelve years now.

yes cause the bruins are the only team that has done this. Not like the Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers havent been doing it for years and its part of our traditions already.....


Though to be fair the Sounders do have a "director" with a mic but he only "sings" maybe a quarter of the song and just holds the mic up to the crowd for the rest. But the fans still sing the whole time.

The difference is that no one cares about Seattle or Portland. They have their very own sports teams out there? How adorable!

My sincerest apologies for not full researching the traditions of every single sports team in the Unites States. Besides those two are soccer teams. How hard can it be to get the 100 fans at the games to sing along? ():)

Reminds me of how the Nucks do the Canadian Anthem at home. Fans sing a little bit of it every home game.

It doesn't have to be anything, but I think it would get pretty tiring. Also, 99% of the population cannot sing to save their lives.

I didnt know 40k fans was viewed as only 100 to hockey fans. Must be an illusion in their minds that SOCCER, that bastard english game, has a team averaging DOUBLE what the highest hockey team averages


And no i didnt actually know that i had to look it up :) Actually would have thought some of the hockey stadiums would have been bigger (like Chicago) to be honest
