Bullet Tooth Tony: A bookie's got blagged last night.
Avi: Blagged? Speak English to me, Tony. I thought this country spawned the f*cking language, and so far nobody seems to speak it.

Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves, Britains never ever ever will be slaves.
no, just the subjects (not citizens) of an overbearing nanny state

This is not the thread for this discussion, there is much to be said about police states and i'm not talking about UK, but i will tell you this.

Rule Brittania is a song to express pride, i'm proud to be a service member of her majesty's troops and proud to have my names among men who came before me, if you got a problem with that then you can shove it up your arse son.

What would you all say is the best accent? I think for men it's Australian, and for women it's British.

For women and for men it's English.

Australian is fun for half a movie before you just want the chump to ah heck off and start speaking like he usually does, pretty much all aussie speakers in the movies don't speak that way otherwise, they do that for the Americans amusement.

Some English accents are okay... RP is sort of grating. There's a more generic London accent that is pretty nice sounding, but Cockney is 'orrible... I personally like Scottish accents quite a bit. Don't care too much for Irish, but I can deal with it. Australian accents are sort of tedious after a while, and New Zealander accents doubly so. Of course, the greatest accent of English in the known world is Standard American...

This is obviously individual preference but i'm actually the complete opposite of you in this.

The greatest accent of English is English, Standard American is known as American English to the entire world outside of the US, that includes your horrible accents and your stupid misspellings that includes z's in pretty much all wordz. ;)

sour grapes over your King's English losing out to the ever-growing American standard? The OED has already allowed a few Americans on the board. The assimilation will soon be complete. Your proud old world is dying; best to suck it up and soldier on like a true Brit, I say ;)

It's the Queens English you sod. :D

I don't really care, English is English except for the US it's known as English and American English, your imperialism adventures have not been as successful as ours were.

Do you know where the financial center of the world is located today? London.

We have been more successful than we even tried to be, in fact, we tried less and gained more.

Maybe something to think about?

I don't disagree with that--but I'm talking about language, not economics. Get rich all you want while we continue to fall into the crapper, but it's the popular American media that we whore out to the rest of the world that is determining the "proper" form of English these days.

besides, we only tried imperialism after it was becoming passe to tyrannize and eradicate foreign indigenous cultures. bad timing on our part, I suppose, but you guys had already swallowed up what was "available" by the time we had a chance. still, we manifest-destinied our way across this continent. (after we kicked your asses (twice)...then rescued you :D)

Without question. I lived in Arkansas for 16 years and made sure that southern accent didn't wash off on me. Terrible.

there are various southern accents. not all are created equal. some are gorgeous (refined Georgian-not the backwoods version), some of the NC accents (my homeland) ...and then there are those that are downright deplorable--such as the Arkansan one that you mention....and SC. those punks.

There is no British accent, that is English, that is how it's spoken.

This echoes a sentiment that I heard from an actor on Conan O'Brien (I can't remember who, some prominent British actor). Conan remarked on his accent, and the guy replied "I don't have an accent. This is how the words sound when they're pronounced correctly."

As to the Boston accent, my grandmother's funeral was last month, and the minister had the thickest Boston accent... It sucked, cause it's my Grandma's funeral, but I had to stifle laughter because of the accent... Good times.

For me, the worst accents would be any accent that is really thick. It makes it hard to understand people, especially over the phone, and you feel like an idiot saying "What? What? Could you repeat that? One more time?" over and over. It's generally countries in Asia or Africa that seem to have that problem. As long as I'm not bothered to understand someone, alot of the African accents are actually pretty cool, as is Indian.

The best is the BBC newscaster types. Slight British accent, upscale, very good enunciation and diction.

WHICH English accent would that be? It's not as though there's one singular accent for your country.

I can handle New England accents as long as they don't get too swishy...you know the yuppie, ivy league type.

My real pet peeve is the rural west outside of the cities. The drawn out sentences and drawl that makes you want to smack someone and tell them to speed it up.

I cant believe it took this many posts to see this one come up. I was just about to mention it.

Long Island, in addition to being one of the worst places on earth due to its people, is home to undoubtedly the worst accent known to man. Same goes for north jersey, those idiots speak with almost the same accent. The north jersey and long island folk probably make up the bulk of the pollution at the jersey shore.

QFT.
One of my favorite lines from Snatch, I must have quoted something similar millions of times during my four years stationed in England.

Wow the english never cease to be pompous windbags. Nor do they ever stop trying to prove they are better than everyone else.

I'm not a big fan of the thick NY/Brooklyn accent.

Sweet, guys from the UK are becoming as arrogant as Americans! Keep it up and the world will hate you more and us less! Weeee!!!

And I've got a newsflash for ya: It is indeed a "British Accent." If there is a language in which there are distinguishable accents, then each accent is given a name. If you want to generalize, we speak "American English." Get used to it.
