Boss won't pay salary.

My gf is in college and is working part time at a medical office. Her boss has to sign off on all of her hours, and she has made copies of all of the Signed time sheets. Yet, she has not been paid for the last 4 consecutive paychecks. She has confronted her boss several times to no avail.

What legal actions can she take to get her boss to pay her for the time she worked?

She's a part time assistant. Hiring a lawyer would undoubtedly be more costly than the amount of money she would get back.

The g/f says call the Department of Labor.

You can file anonymously, they'll audit the employer on her behalf & ensure that she gets what she is owed.

Oh and fine the employer for entertainment value. 🙂

How else do you expect her to go about getting it if she doesn't threaten legal action? Do you think the boss is going to have a sudden change of heart?

She's a college student? See if the Uni provides legal services to their students. We pay the university a small fee (something like $1) that provides us with legal services.

If she does not... how is she gonna prove what she is owed or that she even works there?

Every state has some sort of labor board, they will get your GF her money, they will punish the employer. Thats your answer, you can ask for ten thousand more opinions, you can run in circles with your hands in the air, the answer will be the same, go to the state agency that handles dead beat employers.

Thanks. That will definately get 2 birds with 1 stone. Tee other problem is that she's waiting for a recommendation from her boss before she leaves; hopefully now she'll be able to get both.

Thanks all for your input.

Indeed. It never fares well to have the state dept of labor come a knocking at your door.
She'll get all her money, and they will pay a few times what she is owed in fines.
