tell him if he continues to harrass you and make accusations that you will file a complaint to the labor union and consult a lawyer

if u already have a lawyer i would consult him an let him know whats goin on that way u can sue if manager tries to fire you with out reason.

I don't get why you lied to him. I'd would have said, "I returned it becuase I saw a better deal on the internet." Managers apreicate honesty.

Honestly, I got accused of stealing when I worked at harvey's, I was on close shift, and it was this guy Elroy who was actually doing it. You think that makes sense? That's warped.

I think the moral of your story is don't look the other way if a co-worker is stealing, because if you get blamed you might be foolishly tempted into committing a crime, instead of simply being suspected of it.

You were never accused of anything, according to your story. But you felt that committing robbery, putting yourself at risk for being arrested and prosecuted and having a criminal record, was justified because someone suspected you of something.

The standard answer, almost regardless of circumstance or reasons for the employee leaving, is yes. The only time a large corp is going to say "NO" is if they have evidence that the employee in question was acting illegally. (ie: Theft, qustionable refunds, etc...) Actually, I've always been told they can only validate that you worked there durring the times you said you did. But, even so, you think the HR person at a large corp actualy knows who they are talking about? At my last job, my hr rep was in another state and never met me. Maybe if its a little shop, but large companys dont take risks like talking bad about previous employee's and normally only known then by a piece of paper showing they worked there.

Your solution will be to document your efforts, and be civil to your boss. If he does fire you you will at least have proof that you attempted to do your job, so you can fight them in the unemployment line. But dont sit on it. Confront your boss, ask him what the problem is and come to an agreement. If you can't do that, the job wont last anyways.

 
If you care about your relationship with your store manager, just show him a printout of the Amazon receipt. Just tell him you were embarrassed about getting it much cheaper somewhere else, rather than where you work (even with the employee discount).

It appears you did nothing wrong but face it, if you're caught in a lie (as you were), your credibility is going to go out the window and suspicion is going to be cast (even more so) on you.
 
Dangerer, normally when these types of things go down in retail, the ones that lie about it up front are the one that end up guilty. I worked retail for seven years, given your situation (bought merchandise, return it to a different store, merchanside then missing from original store, then you lied), you are walking down the path of guilt, even if you did not do it.

Sure he did something wrong, he lied directly to his boss while his boss was doing an investigation of stolen merchandise. You realize that the first thing guilty people do when confronted with information that may hurt them is lie? How do you think his boss and the store really feel about him right now?

And calling a lawyer in this situation is a joke. Had he not lied about it originally, this never would have been an issue in the first place. If his state has "at will" employment they can easily fire him over the lie anyway. Now you want him to go find a lawyer when he is probably making typical retail wages? Hello and welcome to the real world.
 
Okay, okay this is silly.

First off, if the OP bought something with an employee discount it can only be returned for the purchase price which is shown on the receipt. I used to work at CC. There's no way to buy a $100 item for $50 and then return it for $100 without a receipt. No place does that.

Also, stores like CC and BB move people around all the time. I had friends who lived by one store but worked at mine which was much farther away for them to drive. Then again, sometimes that happens because they don't like the other store because it's ghetto.

Assuming the story from the OP is the truth, the boss should go to hell. The OP has a right to buy an item from Store A from a retail chain and return it like any other customer to Store B of the same retail chain. As I've said, I've done this before but mainly because I hated the gay retard that always tried to hit on me at the front counter of my store. I rarely liked returning stuff but when I had to, I went through a different store.

Then again OP. If your immediate boss is behaving this way, take it to HIS boss and STOP LYING period. When you said it wasn't your bosses business, that was perfectly fine. When you said you had the headphones at home still that you purchased from the store. That was a lie. Lies never look good. The fact that you lied AT ALL is grounds for dismissal from any place of work in any of the 50 states. Every place of work has a right to expect honesty at all times during work from all employees. Notice I said, during work.
 
A) As everyone said, lying was the dumbest thing you could have done. I don't know why it's so hard for young people to grasp simple concepts like this when they're in the workplace (I'm only 26). Grow up and stop doing things that MAKE you look guilty.

B) Stop complaining.... at least you don't have this guy's problems.

yer stuck. If you really ARENT the thief. then help them to catch him/her. If yer not stealing anything, what do you have to worry about, except a boss who suspects liars as thieves.
