WTF??? I am so angry/confused/frustrated right now its not even funny :|

Okay, so some of you already know I'm going to Vegas next week (fly out 5:30PM April 16th.) Flights/hotel are booked and paid for. I've been looking forward to this since May 2002 (originally me and my friends had planned it as a Christmas getaway and then pushed it back to match everyone's schedules.) Everyone at work has known about it since JANUARY.

Right now we are really swamped here. This is not a bad thing. Before I used to complain about how we weren't getting business (small start-up etc.) and now we literally have 'too much' for our current resources (we are hiring now...interviewing undergrads and MBAs on campus.) We should be so lucky that our company is doing well in this bear market economy.

Currently I'm working on a project that calls for a major deliverable due this month. Last week, in our conference call with the client, I told him he would have it by April 23rd. He said he would need it one week earlier. We've always told him mid- to late-April delivery. I told him I'd see what I could do, but most likely it will be week of the 23rd because I am travelling the week before (didn't tell client it was vacation obviously.) My boss said we could do it earlier. I let it slide until the client was off the phone, then questioned my boss. He said we'd have plenty of time to work on it before I left for Vegas.

This week I've been busy helping others with their projects so I've put my project on the back burner. Today I realized that I probably won't be able to touch my project until Friday or the weekend, and my flight to Vegas is next Wednesday. Not my fault...like I said, I'm helping pick up the slack for others. I told my boss we may have to push my deliverable out another week and he said no deal. 'We need to get this over with and turn our attention to other projects.' I asked him how we can meet this deadline if I'm only getting 5 full days (counting the weekend!) to get it done, and he says 'do what you gotta do.' I could tell from his tone of voice that he expects me to work on it from Vegas if I don't get it done before I leave!!!

ARRRRRRGHHHH!!!!! Not only do I need to work in Vegas, but if I want to have ANY time in Vegas with my friends, I will need to come in this weekend...AGAIN!!! I already worked this Sunday while my sister was visiting!!! I know mad hours is normal for consultants, but seriously, fsck this. If a job ever makes me choose between keeping the job and keeping my life...I'LL CHOOSE MY LIFE THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! This makes me sick...just because our job market is tough and I shouldn't quit I'm expected to put up with this bull???

Vegas = fun
work = no fun

You make your decision. I know that when it comes down to it, I'll be in Vegas for my 21st birthday come hell or high water.

BWAHAHA! Fire ME? NEVAR!!! Thanks for helping me put it in perspective! ;)

Seriously though...its not so much losing my job that worries me. I like working here (contrary to what I've said before.) I just think its unfair and it doesn't set a good precedent. My boss is crazy...he works during his vacations (we'd always get prompt emails/updates while he was away with the fam or during Christmas etc.) but so far he hasn't expected the same of us. That might change...and with all the weekends we're putting in, its just not 'healthy'.

Instead of complasining here you could be working on the project?

Also, helping co-workers is nice but when your rump is on the fire and you are under pressure to deliver I'd say that your project comes first,not last.Put their stuff on the back burner,finish your own work first.

good point! :) bye

EDIT: Before I leave, I should clarify that my boss didn't DIRECTLY ask me to work in Vegas. He just implied that I would need to finish it before I left and I interpreted the "do what you gotta do" to mean he expects me to work while on vacation. I may be reading too much into it and jumping the gun (I hope I am!)
