Bose Wave Radio alternative?

I want to buy my father-in-law a little cd player/radio thing for his office, but don't want to spend Bose dollars... Any suggestions?

Honestly, the Cambridge Soundworks radio that's often recommended sounds a lot like a clock radio to me (I own one) while the Bose has richer sound, similar to a low end sony boom box. It's not worth the $400 they ask for it, but is there anything out there with good sound in a similar form factor? Years ago I had a Denon unit that sounded great and was similarly small, but they don't seem to make "executive systems" anymore.

I thought about that but he mostly listens to CDs while Tivolis are mostly mono, right? Also, does it sound like a really good clock radio, or a mediocre stereo system (which I'm ok with)

Well they do make both mono and stereo units, but probably not a workable option for you with CDs because their CD solution is either a standalone player that connects to the tivoli radio or an integrated unit that is $1,000.

Ha, does it have a cd player? I won't be purchasing until next month, if you're offering.

I might be offering. It's white, with a CD player. I like it, but I could use the money more than a radio. It kind of depends on how much you'd want to pay. I'd have to double check the CD player to make sure it works well(I haven't used it in awhile), and I have to find the remote(I lost it under my bed somewhere).

I don't really have time constraints, so you can look around at other options. I'm not even sure I want to sell it, but I could be convinced :^D

It IS worth it. I have one. Totally worth it, sounds really good for what it is.

whoops, read to fast. If you own one and don't think it's worth it that's fair.

Great! I'll still look around for options since I wouldn't exactly like to give him a used gift (though it's not for a particular occasion, just a thank you gift), but PM me with what you'd like for it. Once my [see other thread about heating issues/boiler repairs/life is expensive right now] is resolved I'll have a better idea of what part of my budget is expendable and not. That may actually be sooner than expected, fingers crossed!

P.S. Had some of the scotch you recommended.. Macallan 12 = win!

Are you saying that there's nothing as good as the Bose for the price range? Or Cambridge? I do own the cambridge but probably expected too much from it... He does currently rock a memorex after all, so it'll be a vast improvement either way.

I remember the Denon one you're talking about, it was pretty sweet. There should still be some "executive systems" out there in the 4-600 dollar range. Nakamichi used to make a nice one. Same with harmon kardon.

I don't know about the wave radio but the sound dock 10 for iphone sounds great considering its size and simplicity.

hahaha. did you seriously just say that a tiny bose 'boombox' was worth $400?

all the retarded bullshit you post now makes sense to me.

OP, that bose unit is probably worth 50 bucks, tops. nearly any alternative would be better, as you're damn near guaranteed equal or better quality and will not be paying a bose price.
