I'm not a big fan of the overpriced Bose systems but this one caught my eye. Reg $1699 now $999 at my local Sears(Topeka). The tag ended in .97 so I know it is a closeout. I saw one in the box but the clerk said they had others in the back. As always with closeouts YMMV.

Went back today and they also have the Sony SA-VE325 for $179 reg $299 and the Sony SA-VE 525H for $299 reg $499. I bought the 325--I'll give an update after I hook it up.

Its a good thing you clearly stated that you're not suggesting this system is actually worth $999. Smart move ;)

For some reason there seem to be many Bose bashers out there. They scour every review site to give Bose products the lowest reviews possible. I think they're just upset that nobody thinks it's cool anymore to have speakers larger than your refrigerator.

Fact is, Bose offers an attractive combination of great sound, aesthetics and ease of use. Sure, you can spend $5,000 and get better speakers, but the average person won't notice the $4000 difference. And no one is requiring you to spend the money; if you don't care about the sound, no need to make a post in a thread about high-quality speakers.

$999 is a great deal for this high-class receiver with speakers and sub. That's about what they go for on eBay, minus Sears' return policy. Count me in.

uh.... people don't like bose cause its overpriced. because its overpriced; it means that others in its price range DO sound better; and DO perform better. Right now all Bose offers over any other true hifi company is that people that don't know about hifi will know the name. so the nouveau riche can laugh and say "i have a bose sound system" and the geeks can say "i have a nht/snell/krell/b&o/psb/nad/monitor audio/etc system". the nouveau riche will obviously snub the geek because "i've never heard of them hahahah" and the geek can be proud in that his sound is much better for the same price.

If there is one thing I learned from working in retail electronics is this:

"No highs? No lows? Must be BOSE..."

There is probably a good reason that they continually get bashed left and right. It's almost (but not quite) as bad as saying Packard Bell is a leader in quality computer systems. I think I've seen more Retrun to Vendor requests on those pieces of shizen than anyone. One system actually came back defective because the metal clip of an ID badge was wedged between the mobo and the sound card.... STILL ATTACHED TO THE ID CARD!

Sorry, I've gotten off subject. Anyway, in my proffesional, audio-phile like opinion, BOSE stinks. Speakers typically have a very short response range and their component system (what few they have) prove themselves shoddy workmanship. The systems perform on their own well enough, and there are worse products out there, but they jack up their prices from a consumer stand-point and it allows little or no room to work with from a retail point of view.

Something to ponder. Take a look at the fine print of your favorite electronics store ad when they hold a big fall sale or something, where you can get 35% off storewide (or whatever). All too often, that little bitty bottom text reads "Not valid on BOSE products". Doesn't say much for them to me.

Fortunately for me, I'm out of retail.

Hey, I have Snell Type D mains, EIII rears and a CR5 center, does that make me a geek?
:D

Anyway, you don't need to spend 5000.00 to find speakers that beat Bose, you can spend 300.00 and easily better them. It's not a matter of big speakers being cool, even though they are, but more plain physics. You can't produce the frequency range of 200hz- 20khz with a 3" paper cone simple as that. That's why I recommend anything over Bose, well maybe not Cerwin-Vega but pretty much anything else.

heheh i have some old school bi-amped snell type Q's on their factory speaker stands hooked up to a nad t750. w000t well since i'm using the term "nouveau riche" i guess a better lable for use would be "nerds"

<- has had his revenge

edit:
oh and yeah i paid 500 for the setup i mentioned above and, i'm willing to bet that it sounds a lot better (for music at least since thats what they are for) than that $999 b0z0 stuff.

Tell me about it, I paid 800 for my walnut type d's used in mint condition and 450 for my eIII's. Best money I've spent and orders of magnitude better than anything Bose ever made. I also have B&W V202's in my room and a pair of PSB Stratus Silver collecting dust.

To anyone that's considered Bose, please do yourself a favor and look into good used speakers instead. Almost anyone I've run into that's into audio takes great care of their equipment and you can find great deals on excellent speakers. You'll be amazed at the difference.

Sorry, my little sis has dibs on them when she gets back from Europe:) I think speakers that size are too big for college anyway. Stick with the Snell's for now and pick up some serious speakers when you move into a bigger, more permanent place. I made it through college with my little V202's and it was so much easier come moving time and if you're concerned about them at a party you can throw them in the closet and use a boom box instead.
