Borderlands trouble

My guy always moves right in the game no matter what, he's just side stepping right all the time, even with joypad and keyboard unplugged, with control bindings set to default. I can't figure out what it is. Something to do specifically with Borderlands, as I don't have this problem in any other games I play. HALP

Did it even do this the first time you installed the game? I'd delete your "My Documents\My Games\Borderlands\WillowGame\Config" folder and so it resets everything to defaults.

Yeah I haven't been able to play it at all yet (just bought it Friday). I'm reinstalling now though so hopefully that will work or I'm going to be pissed.

fuuuuck I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, started it up with all default settings and my guy still does the sideways shuffle. Again with keyboard and controller unplugged. WTF.

Something to do with the xbox 360 controller settings i guess. If I change the xbox 360 controller setting to southpaw my guy will endlessly move in circles instead, again with keyboard, controller, and mouse unplugged. Like the game thinks I have a 360 controller for no reason.

Hmm if you weren't planning on using your joypad you could edit WillowInput.ini in the Config folder and remove this line or try increasing the DeadZone:

Bindings=(Name="XboxTypeS_LeftX",Command="Axis aStrafe Speed=1.0 DeadZone=0.3")

When I changed stuff in the config last time the game just started crashing before I could even play. I'll give it another shot though, couldn't hurt. Oh yeah, also there is no willowinput.ini, I've seen a few other guides referring to it too but there's no willowinput.ini in my config folder.

reinstalled it twice, still walking to the right non-stop. WHY GOD WHY? MAKE IT STOP. Maybe I can get my money back.

Sent a support ticket into 2k games (all their PC games tend to be buggy as shit as why I was reluctant to get this game for so long). Doubt they'll be able to figure it out either though.

search their forums to see if anyone else had this problem.
also try getting some external ini tweaking tool and let it handle the settings.
i played the game flawlessly, for 3-4 hours each session without crashing so i dont know whats wrong with your game...

No one else has this problem, but I fixed it.

This doesn't make any sense but I had to go to device manager in windows and manually disable all controllers. Apparently just because they're not plugged in, doesn't mean the game won't think you're not using a controller. God i hate 2kgames so much. They make fun games but always buggy as shit.

So before I play the game each time I'll have to manually disable my controller in windows. This makes no sense. Why would the guy only sidestep right anyways? Ugh. Also I don't understand why more people haven't had this problem. Really pisses me off though. Really bad programming in the Controller department.

UGH

Good thing you figured it out.

But 2K Games did not develop Borderlands, they published it, the developer is Gearbox Software.

It's probably more to do with the Unreal Engine, wouldn't be surprised if other UE3 games end up having the same problem for him..

I did, cuz it's a lazy FPS and I'm a lazy dude. The enemies just stand their waiting to be head shot I don't need mouse aim for that.

Good that you solved your problem! I'm playing Borderlands (bought it during the Steam sale) with an Xbox360 pad too, luckily it's working flawlessly. I actually prefer the controller after gaming on my Xbox for so long. I like to sit in front of my TV and relax 🙂 Can't do that with a keyboard and mouse 😛 And since I'm playing to enjoy the game and not to compete with others, it works for me the best 🙂 Though I'm sure if I were to battle other people, mouse users would have an edge.

I couldn't imagine playing FPS games using a pad before I started to play on the Xbox, but now I find it great 🙂 Absolutely no problems with fully enjoying all the PC games with a pad.

Somewhat related: I want AA on but don't want to have to download nHancer. I have a 5870 and heard forcing AA doesn't work from CCC.

Is there an easy option (like an .ini file) that I'm overlooking? Will nHancer work with my 5870?

Sadly, no. Can't use AA on Radeons. nVidia created a "subroutine" in their drivers to enable AA in UE3 based games, when they run in DX9. As the engine supports AA only in DX10 (due to the rendering technique used). ATi did the same, but only for UT3. So it works, when you name your executable UT3.exe. There's no tool like nHancer for Radeons, as ATi doesn't allow such a low level user control. Hence you can't add different .exe files for this special "subroutine" on ATi cards. However, Steam games have encrypted executables, so changing their names to UT3.exe won't work for UE3-based games. What I heard works is that you could acquire a non-Steam .exe file for Borderlands and substitute the encrypted one from Steam with it. Change to UT3.exe, force AA through CCC and then it should work. Stressing the word SHOULD 😛

Jesus. Thanks for the explanation, Qbah (and sorry about the Danes this year - my girlfriend wears a Denmark World Cup shirt, eheh).

Didn't know Borderlands ran on UE3, though I'm a space cadet and could've missed it. It's really mind-boggling how such a ubiquitous modern engine doesn't make the most important graphical option easy to use. And Borderlands is such a visually interesting game that the jaggies are REALLY distracting.

Edit:
OK, I stopped being lazy and found a tweaks thread 🙂

Theoretically D3DOverrider enables AA for ATI cards. I'll have to test it.

Incidentally, one of my gripes was the lack of mouse scrolling on quest menus. Tweak fix!

Quest Box Scrolling (Full of Win)

Within WillowInput.ini

Search for all instances of the following (there should only be two instances):

InputKeyName="MouseScrollUp",ModifierKeyFlags=42
InputKeyName="MouseScrollDown",ModifierKeyFlags=42

remove the ",ModifierKeyFlags=42" so they look like:

InputKeyName="MouseScrollUp"
InputKeyName="MouseScrollDown"

To enable scroll wheel in text boxes:

Would a program like RadeonPro do it? Maybe it has a forceable profile.

I use D3D Overrider and it's "only" for V-sync and triple buffering. Of course I use those in all my games. But the tool doesn't manage AA so that Steam post is wrong 🙂

There's a GREAT tool to configure Borderlands' more hidden features:

http://www.mediafire.com/?2w5gmdqjihj

I used it to remove the beginning movies and also the thick black border around every object in the game. Aliasing is A LOT less noticeable now and the black lines bugged me very much on my Xbox. Game looks better without them IMO. Also improved HDR quality (another hidden option, blur, is sadly a bit broken and too strong so I don't use that). Give it a try 🙂

And I'm not a big football fan 😛

might be using this the movies are entirely way to long

Yeah like the first thing I did when I got the game was delete 2klogo.bik and nvidia.bik from the movies folder. There's a couple others too but I can't remember em. I'll have to try out that config editor.
