Yea, I am liking assault rifles in this game. Sniper rifles, not so much so far, although one of my favorite types in the earlier games. Problem with them is low amount of ammo and not much damage. Almost have to have a one hit kill to make them useful. I got one legendary SMG early on, and drops have been crap since. And red chests are mainly green and at best blue. Still in early levels though, hopefully it will get better.

I'm with you on the Maliwan gun design. I'll pick up a purple and get pretty excited by the stats at first glance. Then I notice it's a Maliwan and just about immediately vendor it. I hate the charging mechanic on those things.

I'm relatively new to the Borderlands franchise having bought the Handsome Jack collection during a Steam sale over the summer. One thing I will say about those Shift keys is.....they're (sadly) almost a necessity to progress in BL2. I learned (the hard way....dying many, many, many times) that you can't really progress with weapons more than 2-3 levels below your character. And I've got crap for drops....only three legendary items have dropped for me after 105 hours of play. So the only way to remain competitive (at least for me) was to use a key and get some purple items at my current level. It made a huge difference.

Unfortunately, this is related to a change that they made in Borderlands 2 where weapons scaled considerably based upon level along with enemy health. This was meant to combat people in the original Borderlands that would use lower level weapons on high-level characters. I was one of those people... I forget what the max level is, but my Combustion Hellfire SMG is something like... level 47? And as long as I'm not dealing with an armored unit, they just get shredded.

I've got hundreds of keys (thanks to Zinfamous and Stg-Flame for posting about this in another thread and a link to Orcz), so there is no problem there.

I'm still a bit salty over a bug that I happened to find in Borderlands 2. I was rather religious on how I would apply those keys. I'd even remote into my desktop just to apply one when I saw it was available! (You had to apply them via the game, but in Borderlands 3, you can just use the website.) Unfortunately, it seems no one expected anyone to hoard the keys, and they programmed the key counter variable as a byte, which has a max value of 255. When you attempt to add 1 to a max value, it simply goes to the minimum value, which was 0. So... I logged in one day to find out that I had like... 4 Golden Keys on my account.

But honestly, I don't think that's good game design. I shouldn't have to rely on something outside of the game to help me progress in the game. It just feels gimicky/cheap to me.

I think Diablo solved this problem using their Torment and GR system. As you get more gear, you eventually raise your difficulty levels, which also provides more loot to help you progress further. I think Borderlands 2 added a system like this at the end of UTVHM, but I couldn't be damned to play that game anymore.

^yeah other than that one Jakobs legendary, I am not liking the snipers. Granted, that one had such slow reload (multi-action bolt-action) that it would be garbage if it didn't hit so hard.

...I just noticed something: can't see bullet spread on walls. This....pisses me off. Instead, you either get no effect, or a generic "clip-art bullet hole" that is the exact same for every gun. ...I think I am on High textures, actually. Going to adjust that to see if it changes things. It might sound petty, but if you're used to how guns work in these games, this is kinda important, lol.

One wonders if they wanted players to hate Maliwan guns because Maliwan are major antagonists in this game, haha.

...and so far, raising and lowering texture settings doesn't change the bullet spread graphic. ><

....need to try on other surfaces though. like, not concrete. Though I don't remember that being an issue before.

If you are able to get frequent headshots with a sniper then they're worth holding onto. Some of the enemies are really spongy so cracking off a few headshots to lower shields and expose weak points tends to work fairly well.

I'm still rolling with a Jacobs sniper that is like 10 levels behind. Next to the insane corrosive shotty (that is also something like 100 item levels behind what I am finding now) they are by far my best weapons. It's kind of a bummer to vendor some epic Ilvl 300s because it can't hold a candle to my 220 something.

bah.... so i found out i was going to have a bit of free time and caved in
Ended up buying this game...

Looks like Epic has won me over...

And wow, they are fast...

I'm still getting regular CTD after updating Radeon drivers the other day. ...but that isn't really unique to this game. I think my Vega 64 is just effing problematic. I did try to undervolt some time ago, way back when, very modestly, and it never held. It would constantly reset itself, or crash and I'd get a message that "has been restored to default settings." ...and this message continues even after I have repeatedly removed all custom tweaks and it should be sitting on only default. very annoying.

....but now I'm not convinced that my power supply isn't shitty. was getting some overhead light-flashing and "whomps!" from my speakers this morning, briefly, while running through Eden 6. Now, I've never seen anything like that before.

Only problem I am having technically is repeated conflicts between local and cloud saves. Is there any way to disable cloud saves altogether? I back up my local saves at the end of each day just to be safe. I have heard of users losing their save games altogether.

Spent most of the night last night trying to kill Killavolt or Killawatt, whatever his name is, solo. Got oh so close a couple of times, but died at the last minute and there were no other enemies to kill and get a second wind. It is a side mission, but supposedly one of the hardest bosses in the game. A really annoying fight. Probably will try a few more times, and if I fail will have to get better gear or level up a couple more levels.

I think Amara is the ugliest Siren out of lilith and maya....

Lilith is by far the most overpowered, i remember melting everything with her and her immolation.
Didnt even need to shoot anything, just run around with her angel wings of fire and watch everything melt in a large AoE.

Im not really liking Amara's gameplay style...
She is more like wannabe maya.

Is that 102mb/s transfer? If so nice! I got a 400mb connection and when the planets align on a full blood moon when my isp isn't being a complete pile of garbage i hit about 56mb/s transfer. I need a new wifi adapter for sure on my room computer i am lucky to hit 18mb/s but i rather run 75 feet of ethernet under my floor and run it right to the router.

As for those write speeds those are active write speeds of the installer as its downloading?

yes, i have ATT 1gb fiber.
I think so, unless Epic wants to fake statistics and make it feel faster.
The SSD is a 1TB sammy 850 pro.

I’m new to the borderlands series, downloaded 3 last night. Level 4 now. Anyone got some tips I should be aware of? Also, do you run vaults with actual people later on or are they npc’s?

There are numerous postings on the internet for the skills to choose for the best build of each character. Be sure to follow Twitter for golden keys, they give pretty decent equipment from a golden chest on Sanctuary. You can play solo or online. Unfortunately, a lot of the best loot farming "glitches" have been patched out. The best loot comes after the first playthrough when you can replay the game in true vault hunter mode.

Lilith is my favorite character of all. I started with Amara, but switched to FL4K and the commando, since Amara seems to be heavily melee focused, and that is not my style, as well as it seems not ideal for attacking bosses. And yea, Amara is looks like she has been hitting the roids too much.

Can you switch character mid play? Or do you start over? I feel like the weapons Amara gets are not as good as they should be.

Thx. Didn’t know about Twitter

i dont think you can switch midway.
You would have to start over.

Also there is newgame+ called Vault Hunter Mode.
Everything scales to your level, so you basically restart the game with your current level / skills whatnot.

Seems like you finish the normal runthough of the game at level 38-40... depending on how many stuff you actually went to kill and side missions completed.

I have finished my first run, and well, i am gonna try Zane this time.
Amara is meh. She reminds me of She-Hulk.
She is not elegant and graceful like a Siren, she just point bash.

To be honest i think it would of been better if they brought Phoebe from BattleBorn to BL3 and made her a Siren, or even better a sword Melee type to replace Zero from BL2.

She would of made one hell of a BL3 character, even down her to her emotes.

I think you have to start from scratch with a new character. However, there is no real difference believe the weapons Amara gets and what a different character will get.

I'm the same way and Lilith is easily my favorite in the series, still. Something about the maniacal joy with a late-level siren, gleefully roasting and corroding things to death. Lilith was....always very happy about this, haha. I came to enjoy Maya, too, but her Sireness was a bit different. She was more: "I'm powerful, STFU." Lilith was always "Hahahha, watch that turd burn to pieces! This is too fun...."

Definitely don't like the Mele focus of Amara, and was also planning to switch to Fl4k early on, but I've stuck with Amara, and am going for this eterna-Samara. it's not....great leveling up, because I should probably just go another route while leveling, then really try this type of build late 30s/40 (I'm currently 32, and still need more points to make it feel like anything) ...but! I'm not having to punch stuff, and it's still elemental-heavy with my procs and damage. If you pick Maliwan or proper elemental guns (I don't like the way vladoff is now elemental-only-on alt mode...which is a little missile that only works every 4 or 5 seconds...their ele handguns are really bad compared to previous series).

Here's that build (I wouldn't say best, but it's a very viable mele-alternative maya. the trick is ensuring the proper action skill that will trigger all of your Samsara stacks.

...Samsara really only makes sense when you can keep at least 4-5 stacks up. I've found that 2-3, really aren't that good at all, even if I have modded into it, so +2 = 5 points into Samsara. That's why this build takes so long: need enough to unlock the 5-fist punchy thingy, which is late in that red tree (for phase grisp that counts as attack), Max Samsara, and Max the action skill CD in the blue tree. So, it's really a later-level thing to play with. Not a blast for leveling...unless you are just having fun with Jakobs pistols like I am, and things just die anyway, ahha. I think the dislike for her gun choices is that maliwan kinda sucks in this game, and you need good Maliwan or at least some very good Dahl/Hyperion elemental SMGs to have fun with a Siren, but we're not seeing that right now, on top of most of her tree really being mele focused for most of the leveling. but they also just removed some of the charge from maliwan and also bumped the standard damage rating, I think (ele always had highest damage rating, but they nerfed the base damage compared to other guns on release, but notes say they have moved that back to more normal damage ratings)

Phasecast is really hit or miss for procing Samsara. I like it because of short CD, but I'm usually stuck with 1 or 2 stacks, because of how it does little splash damage and requires a lot of good placement. and Smash is actually pretty good, but very long CD. It does give you some mele and in-your-face, that actually works well with jacobs pistol play, so I stick with it. It is easier for getting at least 3 procs, because it is wider spread and easier to control the mobs around you that will be hit.

I've been running jacobs-heavy pistols and this legendary jacobs assault rifle i got recently...stash or mission. dunno. It's very in-your face, and lack of ele weapons means less procs....but it's still kind of fun just blasting things in the face, when you get used to how fast those things fire and reload. now they've nerfed all jacobs pistols a bit, but buffed their ARs, which is kinda cool. I haven't noticed much of a sacrifice in the pistols tbh (get close enough and steady enough to open a cyclinder in somethings face, in a crowd sitting, you can usually take out 2 or 3 targets with one 5-6 round cylinder. ...or not. it really is hit or miss depending on your skill. The auto-ricochet on crit is just so good with these guns:

FYI--Ricochet function in BL games is always very very good, because ricochets are always crit damage. Even if you have the damage reduction like they usually do, it counts for a crit because it always ricochets into a head, if it hits anythying....why this is good: lots of skills proc on crit, or damage. but with crit especially, this ensures that all your ricochets are going to proc whatever skill points you have invested into that. It's also just brilliant for high-crit toons (I'm guessing Fl4k is really nuts with ricochets)

you basically just start a new character. ...I don't know if or when Willowtree will be released for this one...and how that plays with whatever Eula that Epic Games makes you sign, or allows for BL3 (co-op games can always be dicey...but these aren't competitive so usually different rules.) Anyway, that allows you to tune everything in the game--character, level, position in game, guns in your stash...everything. It's the only way to essentially create a character at whatever point you want, playthrough level, all the things, really.

These have been fine with all past BL games, on steam and others, anyway, so I'm curious what happens here. (PC only though, IIRC).

Save game editing for these games tends to be somewhat standard. I don't think these games really have a crowd that looks down on this. The nature of multiple playthroughs on all toons to get to that end-game build stuff, gearing out and just having fun playing the meta game....it just takes out a lot of the busy work, tbh. And if you want to test something that you see with some weird gun and/or shield that makes no sense other than for some funked-out skill set in one of the classes, then you can tune it on an edited game without all of farming hassle. ....It's video math for nerds, and it doesn't impact anyone else's game

(actually, the first BL, Willow could make some ridiculous guns because of the way the RNG ssytem worked for gun parts: any part for any gun type, regardless if you see AR stock on Rocketlauncher body. It was...weird but it made for some funky stuff. ...and it also allowed for user-created, impossible-to-drop guns (because you could take a locked legendary stock piece from a rifle, and put it on a blue pistol, or something weird like that), that you could trade to other players and manage to break parts of their game. Or something....it did have issues, but was also more editable than the later versions for BL2 and TPS. (you want 999 slots in your backpack? OK! BL2 and TPS had those locked through maximum-allowable SDUs or something. You could give yourself all the eridium to buy all the SDUs at level 5 or so, but you could never create more slots for whatever reason)

While the gameplay is more of the same (which isn't a bad thing.. mostly) I have to say the story doesn't really do much for me. I think we've crossed over to where you need to understand the world and previous games for things to have any impact. Even then, I can't say I'm too enthralled.

The twin villains are pretty vanilla, which is not a good thing, but otherwise I kinda dig it--feel involved. I mean, there was that one thing they did that really pissed me the eff off, so they have their moments. The crass humor doesn't bother me. It can be lame, but I usually just focus on the complaints of Brutes and little things and the Goliaths as they die...pretty much 40% of my enjoyment in these games:

"Remember me...but one foot taller!" 😀

and I mean come on:

Ice T as part of your crew! I thoroughly enjoy those Ice T moments, haha.
