MEXICO CITY -- It's one of the safest parts of America, and it's getting safer.
It's the U.S.-Mexico border, and even as politicians said more federal troops are needed to fight rising violence, government data obtained by The Associated Press show it actually isn't so dangerous after all.
A new FBI report said the nation's top four big cities with the lowest rates of violent crime are all in border states: San Diego, Phoenix, El Paso and Austin. Violent crimes in southwest border counties are among the lowest in the nation per capita and have dropped by more than 30 percent in the last two decades.
An in-house Customs and Border Protection report shows 3 percent of Border Patrol agents and officers were assaulted last year, compared with 11 percent of police officers and sheriff's deputies assaulted during the same period, usually with guns or knives.

looks like the propaganda czars are on overtime and full of shit once again.

interesting enough, the "story" links to no data sources

I can not wrap my head around the mentality of manipulating or wanting to hide the crime rate. Why or who in the right damn mind who do such a thing?

Because reality once in awhile is quite refreshing.

There is a Wall Street Journal article that quotes Arizona Law Enforcement officials...
In Phoenix, police spokesman Trent Crump said, "Despite all the hype, in every single reportable crime category, we're significantly down." Mr. Crump said Phoenix's most recent data for 2010 indicated still lower crime. For the first quarter of 2010, violent crime was down 17% overall in the city, while homicides were down 38% and robberies 27%, compared with the same period in 2009.

Arizona's major cities all registered declines. A perceived rise in crime is one reason often cited by proponents of a new law intended to crack down on illegal immigration. The number of kidnappings reported in Phoenix, which hit 368 in 2008, was also down, though police officials didn't have exact figures.

Austin, Phoenix, border cities? Someone needs a map.

Crime is down around the country and has been trending that way for a while. There's absolutely no doubt crime in Mexico in a lot of places is out of control with the drug gangs fighting each other and the government. It would be silly to think that some of that isn't spilling over across the border.

fixed the title for you guys - covered everything, basically according to the AP the border area is safe, according to some information that we have no way to verify.

Even if this pertained to genuine "border-towns," does that mean we should allow the illegals to stay, or just ignore them?

umm, no, it doesn't.

Get them the fuck out.. NOW.

As a legal immigrant to this country, I would personally love to see every single illegal deported tomorrow. I know it cant/wont happen, but we still need to do everything in our power, nationwide, to make them want to leave and/or stop coming. Period.

A cop cites specific figures for all other crimes and states definitively that crime figures are down statewide, but since he doesn't have specific numbers for kidnapping, you dismiss the entire report, ignoring any facts that don't support your preconceptions and ridiculing the source...

You really aren't the sharpest knife in the drawer, eh? But I suppose everyone already knows this.

lol. Just pulling from the liberal playbook. This forum is infected with them, so I thought it would be a good idea to start using their tactics. Everyone knows this.

Ironic thing is Arizona has unlimited carry restrictions on guns. You can carry anything already legal anywhere, no permit required. Gotta love it when one political agenda backfires on another.

Austin and Phoenix are not "border cities" by any stretch of the imagination.

Which side of the border would they be on?

Given the location of Mexico's population you really have to wonder, and in turn agree that the concept of "border" can be much further north than previously realized.

I'm sorry, but that is just asinine, even from you.

If you want to compare crime rates in "border cities" don't include cities that are several hundred miles from the actual US-Mexico border.
If we used your logic the border of Mexico would stretch to Newfoundland and the Yukon.

So this 6 month time frame we're tracking indicates a decline in crime.

6 months.

And I wonder what has caused this decline? I wonder if it's the minor exodus of illegal aliens due to the sweeps by Sheriff Joe, bad economy, and recent legislation? And I wonder what the % is of the crime that was committed was the result of illegal aliens? Such an interesting stat to wonder about...
