I don't understand why he taped in Romania.

Romania != Kazakhstan

Kazakhs looks almost East Asian.
Romanians do not look East Asian.

I only hope the villagers don't waste their time and resources in pursuing a lawsuit.

Cohen has been deceiving people for years on Da Ali G Show. Both he and his lawyers are well versed in what they can/cannot do in a legal sense. The villagers won't win any legal action.

He's not welcome in K-stan; I remember a Kazakh government official speaking out against his portrayal of Kazakh people long before the movie was announced.

It's not like they were in any great bargaining position. If they didn't accept the 3 pounds Cohen could have gone to any other of the millions of poor worthless towns and given them the same deal.

I guess its a 2 way deal here, for villiagers not making sure what exactly they were doing and for borat being an asshole.

Best thing I can compare Borat to, is Nigerian scammers, ebay scammers, and "you win a million dollars" scammers.

And maybe compare it to a scammer that called an old Grandma and told her to give him $3k to her Grandson, which she would do if he were really were her grandson, but you see, he is a fake one, just like Borat is..

He stole money from the villagers? That's news to me.

Yes, he stole money that he could have used for real, consenting actors.

these pieces are only written because the movie pulled in 50 million in two weeks. Same with the lawsuits being filed. From teh guy claming cohen based borat off him, to the frat guys that made stupid comments in the movie.

If the movie bombed you wouldn't here a thing about it.

If the movie bombed, the village probably would never know how they were represented, so you're right. If the movie had bombed and they somehow found out how they were represented, I think they still would have been pissed.

I agree they'd still be pissed. But from some of the quotes the people seem to be more upset that they were only paid 3 pounds and not more.

You have an interesting interpretation of the law. Please don't breed.

Exactly, its not about money, its about lies. I'm sure they could have let borat film them for free, they are not pissed off about money.

The entire movie was about deception and exploitation. That's why it was so funny.

It's what our society seems to thrive on. Strong evidence can be found within this very thread.

It makes me kind of sad.. but only because the crew *could have* payed them more money that they may desperately need. However, the fact of the matter is that they didn't, and they didn't need to.
If the villagers will do it for 3, then why pay them more? Yes, you could spare it, but when was the last time you saw Hollywood giving away money that they didn't need to?

You have money, why don't you donate some to them?

Same concept.

Possibly so. You might do things for 6 months of pay that you wouldn't do for one day of pay. The question at hand is whether he negotiated an unfair contract by not truthfully informing them of what he was doing.

This isn't about the amount of money involved, it's about exploiting a village of people who had no idea why they were being filmed. If they had been properly informed about what they were doing, they certainly wouldn't have sold their dignity for £3.

That is what his entire movie is about....
