Bootup problems with new mobo/CPU

I just got a new Duron 600 and Abit KT7. I took out my old mobo (after reformatting the HD) and put the new one in. Installed the motherboard, CPU and Video Card....When I go to boot, the system powers up ok, I see the video card info, then it goes to the bios screen, does the memory check, then hangs..The problem is that I have no keyboard input. When I push delete to get into bios, nothing happens. If I plug the keyboard in while its powered up, I see the lights (caps lock, num lock...) on the keyboard flash, but still no input. Anyone know what could be wrong here??

It sounds like your CPU is overheating. What sort of cooling do you have on the CPU? You might want to try reinstalling whatever you are using to cool the CPU to make sure the two surfaces are flush with each other.

Thanks for the reply...
but, I don't think its the cooling that is causing the problem. I have a GlobalWin FOP32 hooked up to it, and I'm pretty sure that the CPU and heatsink have good contact (there's thermal grease on the heatsink when I take it off). When I try booting without the heatsink + fan on, it does the same thing, but the screen goes blank after a few seconds (as the CPU overheats), whearas with the heatsink on, the screen keeps displaying the ram check.
Still no keyboard input.....
Thanks..

Probably not a good idea to plug/unplug a ps2 keyboard while powered up. I know some people will disagree, but this will kill your ps2 port. You could try posting your board out of the case (just in case (pun intended) it's not grounding right,or there is a post or loose screw shorting it out.) I would probably clear the cmos , and get it to post without the kb, then power down , connect your kb and post again.

I seem to recall the Asus K7M having a similar keyboard problem. A bios flash fixed it. I know that you can't boot so flashing the bios is out. Also, alot of Athlon mobos were/are very very picky about keyboards. Try a different keyboard.

With the keyboard unplugged, will the system boot? Can you provide more info on your system specs?
Type of Ram?
Type of PS?
Type of Keyboard?

Don't try booting w/o the fan, I'm afraid you could burn the CPU core. Also, the core casing is very weak with a number of people actually breaking the CPU by removing and replacing the fans repeatedly.

From what I have read, a Duron will fry in a very short time if allowed to run without a heatsink fan on it. This is quoted from Hard OCP when they fried a T-Bird:

"AMD has told us in CERTAIN TERMS that the 1GHz TBird WILL BURN UP IN EIGHT SECONDS without proper cooling. Made SURE you don't goof like we did!!"

I would imagine that a 600 Duron would not take much longer. I hope not for your sake, but it sounds to me like it is either that, or the core may have been damaged installing the HSF, or a combo of both.

Thanks for the input everyone-
I gave a call to Abit tech support, and apparently the KT7 has issues with Durons manufactured on week 31 (ie, mine). So I have to send in my bios chip and have them reprogram it with the latest bios. I hope this is the problem and not a fried cpu (the tech support guy didn't mention anything about overheating..). I was surprised to see that without the heatsink and fan on, the cpu got very hot, very fast.
