Bootup problem

For some reason, when I reboot, my system freezes just as my desktop appears (and I need to do a hard reset - or power off/on if I don't want it to happen again). There's no problem when I power-up, only when I reboot. There's no problem booting or rebooting into safe mode, though. So there must be something like drivers trying to load (which dont load in safe mode) which causes the system to freeze. Although I'm not sure how this could only happen on a reboot.
I've emptied out my startup menu in safe mode, and run a registry cleanup, but to no avail. Oh, and I'm running win2000, ghz tbird asus a7v (1003 bios) with the hdd on the promise udma100 controller. All I may have done to cause this is fiddle about with my multiplier and fsb settings, although I can't see how this can be related.

This is a bit vague and jumbled, so if you need any other info to help, just ask. Thanks in advance.

Try reseting your fsb settings and multiplier settings back to the default for your CPU, and then see what happens.

My cpu is clocked back to normal. Everything is set identically as it was before I had this problem. And btw, it's not just at reboot, it's all the time. About 1 in 10 power-ups/reboots allow me to get into windows - the rest just freeze just after the icons have appeared on my desktop. Safe mode is bootable all the time. Any ideas what this might be? And how can it happen totally randomly? I mean, there must be someone in the universe who knows why computers do things totally randomly.. hmpf... ignore me, i'm just annoyed 😀

Problem solved... thx for your help

I reinstalled my sound drivers and the problem seems so have fixed itself.
