Bootleg DVD before actual DVD comes out

Before anyone jumps on me and calls for the lock - I'm just asking an innocent question, with no intentions on asking where to find or dl. the movies.

Okay, the other day, I was walking around chinatown and they were selling DVDs for DVDs that are not released yet, LOTR2, 0007 die another day, etc The DVDs does not have subtitles are anything, it's widescreen and the quality was really good. My question is how is this possible? My best guess is that it's a screener placed on a DVD.

/me puts flame suit just in case ...

thanks!

Academy Screeners.

When movies are submitted to members of the Academy for conideration they are usually put on DVD and it doesn't take long for them to get leaked.

The Two Towers Academy Screener has been available on the Internet since early January.

Sometimes they just bring a video camera into the theatre and record the sonofab.... and then sell that mofo.

but you can get these types of dvds for releases after the academy awards....are they still sending the academy screeners after the awards?

LOL, I was like, LOTR2 and 007 Die another Day are already out, then I noticed the post date.
Many reviewers receiver a copy of a movie for review, usually months before the movie comes out. Sometimes they leak a copy out...

That's old school. These things are true DVD quality with digital sound and the works.

I will be dressed as a chinatown representative, hiding my FBI badge 🙂

On the second thought, could you get me LOTR3?

So these suckers are the real thing? Or just screeners on a DVD? At first I would think it's the real thing since it has all the menus and stuff, but transferring a real DVD can be drag seeing it's so huge, 4+gigs per side right?

The DVDs are produced by the film companies, they pay for the transfer. All that happens is someone gets one and copies it with their DVD burner.

Yep, screener DVDs. They used to just release rips, but now releasing the entire thing untouched is getting more common. Two Towers untouched is an 8gig download...fills up 2 DVD-Rs!

And this are the ones without the nagging "illegal" messages? Also, do they have all the menus and stuff?

They usually do have the illegal message stuff and they do have menus, but no extras. They are usually a pretty good quality and a lot of them come with Dolby Digital 2.0, 5.1 and DTS soundtracks on them.

There is also a 4.7GB version available. The video is downsampled but it still looks damn good.

omigosh, only a few years out of college and my T1 connection and look at what I've been missing ... I never guessed transferring 8gigs for 1 movie made any sense ... but maybe it's not that bad with a T1 or T3 connection ...

Yeah but on a movie like the two towers the extra quality is worth it... I had both copies and the 2 disc is noticably better....

daredevil just out....

that's only the CAM version though, not the DVD ver.

Look a little bit harder.. I'd recommend under the DVD-R section. 🙂

um, no. He is talking about Daredevil, you are talking about LOTR. Daredevil was released earlier as a cam, but was nuked.

The Die Another Day review DVD was actually a new type of DVD, where the movie was only viewable for a certain length of time. After X amount of hours (24-48, I forget which), the actual chemical composition of the disk changed, and the disk was unreadable.

Still wouldn't prevent someone with a DVDRom from ripping the movie in under that time though.
