Try booting from a DOS boot disk and doing "fdisk /mbr" on hd1. That should rebuild the master boot record on hd1.

Do you have the correct hd selected in you bios? In my bios I can select what device I would like to boot off of, like the floppy disk or the cdrom or the 1st harddrive or the 2nd one.

Where did you install LILO/GRUB to when you installed Mandrake? It looks like maybe you put it on the MBR of "HD1", which would mean that it would get terribly confused when it tried to reference "HD2" after it was removed. If that's the case, then fdisk /mbr, as suggested, should work. But if you know where you installed the bootloader, that would be useful information.

what version of Mandrake are you using? I have 9.0 and it has a graphical boot selection screen that allows you to select which OS to boot. You can download the iso files for it at www.mandrake.com
