Booting XP from CD

Hi. My brother's pc is still under win98, and I wanna install xp on his system. Sadly I just found out that his floppy drive is dead and I can't boot from floppy. I've never tried to boot from CD or anything else. I went into the BIOS and changed the CD to be checked first on the boot sequence but it does nothing (Yes, the CD is in) Is there anything that i'm missing?

Thanks in advance.

LOL, I think you caught him 😀

hehe. As an upstanding member of the Anandtech community, I cannot condone such behavior. I will engage in it, but I cannot condone it. 🙂

DisinfectedDuck: Install it from Win98. You'll have the option to upgrade or do a clean install.

In the BIOS set the IDE channel the hard drive is connected to to None, the IDE channel the CD is connected to to Automatic, as well as setting the CD to be checked first.

i have a oem version that i got from going to a microsoft seminar and tried to install it last night by booting it from cd. i could not get the cd to boot and ended up installing from win 98. now i hope i can find a workarround becuase i probably in the future wont have win98 on my other drive to do this.
dont assume someone is using a illegal copy just becuase they are having a problem.

i have installed XP on a number of systems and found that on some i had to change all boot devices to CDROM and other boot to disable and after it will boot from cd then after XP setup reboots for the first time i gointo bios and change to HDD /CDROM/LS120

and all is fine but if i only have CDROM / HDD it wont boot from CD and my friend another system builder gets the same problems sometimes

try it you can only waste some time
