Booting without video!!!

I just (accidentally) discovered something.
The Tyan T1854 PIII Motherboards we have at work will boot without a video card installed!!!
I had a ati rage IIc go bad so I pulled it, and turned on the computer to see if the bios beeps changed. Nope no change, but....
Just for sh1ts and g1ggles I try sshing in to the machine (linux squid server)
It works great
The machine is still handing out DHCP addresses, still doing wonderful.
Huh?
I thought you needed video to boot?
Is this peculiar to this system? to tyan boards?
Can you make any motherboard boot without video?
