Booting troubles

I'm trying to fix a computer of a friend of mines...I reformatted his hard drive, Windows XP installation went well, but now when the computer is booting up after it passes the WinXP splash screen the monitor goes black and windows does not finish loading. Any suggestions to fix this problem, or to what the problem is related? Thanks
