ok, not sure where I should post this, but I have a question about booting off the cd.

if i have osx 10.3 installed, and i try to boot w/ the osx 10.3 cd, is it suppose to boot off the cd? or will it bypass the cd since there really isn't anything wrong w/ the installed OS?

Thanks
Linh

it will boot of cd to install or fix. it has to be selected from the startup disck c.p. when runing the os and restarted or hold down c at startup or hold down option and select it at startup.

hrm.. it booted before, but now i can't boot off the cd for some reason. I think the drive might be dying or something... it couldn't read the cd until i swapped a different one in, and then back.

Hold c while booting to boot from the cd

Or, hold option at boot and get all possible boot options.

Then, start reading the Mac board at arstechnica for a big mac community.

Is this for a Powerbook? If so the disc is a DVD not a cd. Are you sure you are using a DVD reader to do the boot?

Yep, just hold c down.

Sometimes it takes a few tries.

Best thing is turn your computer completely off(with the CD inside it), put your finger on the c button, hold it down, then power up.

Unfortunatly the CD isn't smart enough to know if the computer is screwed up. The boot proccess just looks for the most convient file system to boot off of..

Also you can go thru the little apple in the top and specify a boot partition. You can specify the CD from their and it will select it, but you have to remember later to reselect OS X's partiton. I forget the actual placement of the boot partition chooser dialog... maybe it's in the control panel or something.
