Hey guys,

My computer was functioning fine for the last few weeks but then started acting weird. Let me go through recent changes:

- It changed positions from my room to the living room.
- After that change the LAN port temporary stopped working but then started working again somehow.
- It uses a different monitor - though Im assuming that doesnt matter. Its a new monitor from Acer.
- It got a virus - one that attached itself to the Listener.exe - my dad always screws my computer up with this shit. I scanned - it was detected - and during the boot time scan it WASNT able to remove it or move it.
- I scanned with Malwarebytes - and it found NOTHING.
- Im scanning now - so far nothing.
- I also just installed the drivers for a wireless printer - though the computer isnt directly connected to it.

Im not sure if it is gone or not but we'll see.

Now heres the problem Im having: when I boot up the computer its really slow and a black screen flickers in and out as it boots. Sometimes it boots and sometimes it just hangs. Sometimes when turn the computer back on from forcing it to power down it doesnt show the windows logo or anything. I restart again and it boots up. I also purge the electricity in the system by pressing the power button with the PSU switched off and that seems to help too though that may just be the restart.

When I set the computer to sleep mode - the computer seems to go into sleep mode when you look at the display but then the computer - which has LED Fans and RAM stays on and thats how I can tell its on.

Whats the problem?

There are a few possibilities.

1) Something wrong with hardware. To test this, monitor temperatures (use Realtemp), test memory (Memtest86+), test CPU (Prime95), test HDD (download from HDD manufacturer site).

2) Something is wrong with Windows. Could be caused by the infection (likely), or by errant printer drivers (unlikely but possible). Try doing a Windows repair reinstall. If that doesn't work then you may need to just back up your data and do a system recovery (if name brand system with recovery discs or partition) or a Windows format-reinstall.

Check the BIOS and make sure that it is set to S3 sleep (also known as Suspend to RAM STR). As for the other issue, it sounds like you haven't quite cleaned up that virus yet.

Alright, the computer seems to be running fine. I went into msconfig and disabled like 6 or 7 startup programs - most of which were related to the printer. I also checked the BIOs and it was set to S3 as it should have been. I think I switched one or two other features as well but cant remember what. I also booted into Safe Mode and scanned with both Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware and both turned up nothing. I can usually trust Malwarebytes to find something if there is something and there wasnt. I also looked up that .exe and turns out it wasnt a system file but a Kodak Easy Share App file and that it may have been a false positive.

Update: I just checked the "scan logs" in Avast! and in the "results" section of the boot time scan I recently did it says that "no virus was found". Thats odd. At the bottom it does say that it found 1 infected file but Im not sure what that means. The virus itself is called: Win32:Malware-gen

Anyway though - when I put the computer to sleep it actually shuts off now. It also turns back on just fine. Ive done it a few times now to make sure and its been alright. Not sure what was going on but maybe it was a driver issue? Something of the like?

Check your network controller Power Management properties. Sometimes if the device is allowed to wake the computer, it wont sleep properly.

Could be that some of that printer crap was stopping it from going to sleep. Printers almost universally have crappy/bloated drivers, so I wouldn't surprise me (minimalist Brother drivers forever!)
