Bootable IDE HD Enclosures

Hello All,

I'm wondering if anybody can point me to an IDE HDD external enclosure that will allow me to install an OS to it and boot right from it. I tried it with my current enclosure (a Mad Dog enclosure), but it wouldn't allow me to install a Vista beta (back when I tried this months ago).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Trevor

Well, you will need to first set the BIOS to boot from your external HD. It is in the boot options somewhere. Just look around a little for it. Some external hard drive enclosures will not boot as they all have different chips inside.

My board's an old Nforce3 board, but I definitely have it set so it can use all USB devices attached to it. I even tried it attached via Firewire (the enclosure offers both), but it wouldn't work that way either. I'll take a look at it again tonight when I get home.

Thanks

The answer to this is going to depend heavily on the OS. I'm assuming you're going to want to use Windows here, and Windows isn't going to completely work when booting from an external Firewire/USB drive. Your best bet would be to get a eSATA bracket and then an eSATA enclosure, so that you can basically use your external drive as an internal SATA drive.
