Bootable DivX

I gave up trying to get DivX running on my machine. It used to work fine under Windows 2000, so I know my hardware can do it.

I heard there was a bootable ISO I could download in order to play DivX movies under a thin operating system. I heard that I could boot off of one CD and insert a second containing the avi file, and it would just play.

Does anyone know anything about this?

There are some Linux distros like Movix, that boot into an mplayer gui. Check that one out, a friend of mine has built a vcr using an ITX-PC based on that one. You can find it on www.freshmeat.net (too lazy to do that url thing ;-)

I tried this awhile ago but sound hardware was limited and of course all the codecs are not functional under Linux.

That's not true...I haven't tried Movix, but mplayer under Suse uses a win32 codec pack, which derives from Nimo codec pack and has the same funcionality. The only formats i couldn't get to work are Quicktime (although it is supported) and of course .wmv.

Ah that's coo. But what soundcard/chip did you use? When I tried Movix it only supported Sound Blaster 16 era hardware I think, which while ubiquitous is not really pop with people who are into HT and such. Audigy was not supported. :( I have no idea about digital output support either. I just tried it on a lark anyway and did not really have any intention of using it at this point but it is interesting.

What kind of problems are you having with Divx? I built a special computer out of old parts that is only used to play Divx movies on any TV I plug it into and I have no problems getting the codecs and all software running, heck it even has a remote control so my ass can get bigger.

Just out of curiosity, what are the specs of that machine?
